What is Passport America?

This week our Q&A addresses a question we’ve received for many months, and its all about saving money!

What is Passport America, are we members, and is it worth the yearly fee?

What is Passport America?

Passport America is a discount camping membership program (in fact, it was the first one we ever joined). It offers a whooping 50% off at every participating campground and has a huge database of of sites across America.

A yearly membership costs $44 (or you can sign up for longer memberships to reduce the average yearly cost).

Passport America’s official description of the membership is this:

Passport America invented the 50% Discount Camping Club in 1992 and has continued to improve on that great concept. Over 1900 campgrounds across the US, Canada, and Mexico are currently participating in the Passport America Program, with new parks joining daily. Although our concept has often been imitated Passport America is still the best value, lowest price, and the World’s Largest network of Quality Campgrounds of its kind.

Is it Worth the Price?

If you’re the type of camper that needs full hookups, laundry, hot showers, or a dump station at least once a month; Passport America is definitely worth the yearly membership fee.

We love paying as low as $7.50 for full hookups! While the average night with a PA member cost about $13, we’ve used the membership to save big at beautiful RV Resorts throughout Southern California and Arizona.

It’s hard for us to imagine Passport America not being a valuable membership for any fulltime RVer.

Is it Easy to Find PA Locations?

The Passport America network is huge. We’ve found campgrounds throughout the rural Dakotas, in tourist locations, and in large urban areas.

They also have an easy-to-use iPhone app that makes searching simple. Below you can see an image of all the participating campgrounds in the state of California.

It should be noted that all member parks have specific terms of usage; some allow the discount all the time, others only during weekdays, and others only during off-season. While this seems limiting, due to the large network of parks & resorts, we’re still able to find one that fits with our travel days.

Our Passport America Experience

We’ve had some amazing experiences with our Passport America membership. It has allowed us to stay at resorts that would otherwise be out of our price range.

Some of the most memorable experiences were resort hopping in the Palm Springs / Desert Hot Springs area. We took advantage of the 50% discount and soaked in hots springs during the winter while staring at the night sky.

It felt like a never-ending vacation!
