Free Camping Secret: Indian Bread Rocks in Bowie, Arizona

After leaving our boondocking site in Ajo, we began the eastward trek back to our hometown in Alabama.

Indian Bread Rocks was the perfect place to land for a week – it’s located right off I-10 and is easily accessible.

Here’s our personal experience:

Location: Indian Bread Rocks Recreation Area, Bowie, Arizona

GPS32.2386, -109.5001

Date/Temp: We pulled into Indian Bread Rocks in early February. We were surprised by the cool temps; days were in the 60s with nights in the 30s.

Amenities: The campsite offers a vault toilet, trash cans, picnic tables and large grills.

There is no water available onsite, but the gas station in Bowie has convenient (and free) water access.

Wifi/Cell: Cellular Internet connection is varied. Our T-Mobile hotspot was very fickle, connecting randomly throughout the day. AT&T and Verizon had super fast 4G LTE connection.

Noise: Peace and quiet are easy to find at Indian Bread Rocks. The only campers here were us and our caravanning friends. An occasion car would drive down the main road, but it never disrupted the peace.

Grocery/Errands: There is no grocery shopping within 35 miles. Make sure to arrive with a full supply of food. Wilcox is the closest town with decent shopping.

We did use the local post office, but it has limited hours.

Dog Friendly: The campground is dog friendly but there are a lot of cacti out here, so be careful! River loved exploring the area.

Entertainment: Hiking & climbing the rocks was our favorite activity here. The night sky is beautiful, as well. Don’t expect to be entertained by anything other than nature!

Did you have any trouble finding it? We went to Fort Bowie NHS recently and had planned to stop at Indian Bread Rocks to picnic but overshot the turnoff on Apache Pass Road. When we realized we’d gone past it, we just kept going and had lunch at the trailhead for Fort Bowie instead.

Also, if you need to do serious shopping, Safford has a Walmart Super Center and a Home Depot in addition to a decent variety of other stores (Ace Hardware, a bike shop, an RV service and parts place, a couple sporting goods places, etc.) . It’s a little over half an hour from Indian Bread Rocks going up US-191.
