Texas is a massive state with very few free-camping options in its western half. They do allows 24-hour stays at their Interstate Rest Stops, but its hard to catch a good night sleep among all the surrounding noise.
Then we discovered Schreiner City Park (on both Campendium & Free Campsites)! All the reviews were great, but when we arrived, it still exceeded our expectations!

Here’s the breakdown:
Location:Schreiner City Park, Junction, Texas
GPS: 30.4899, -99.7601
Date/Temp: We pulled into Junction during mid-February. The temps felt great with highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 40s.
Amenities: The city park offers multiple water spigots that can be easily accessed. They also provide a bathroom, seasonal pool, disc golf course, basketball court, grills, and best of all, water-front campsites.
Wifi/Cell: Cellular Internet connection is great. Our T-Mobile hotspot received full bars and had no problem streaming movies. Likewise, AT&T was consistently fast with 4G LTE. Many of the reviews we read noted that Verizon received weak signal, we couldn’t test that, but beware if Verizon is your only provider.
Noise: Peace and quiet comes pretty easily here. During the day there were people playing sports and fishing and at night there was an occasional vehicle driving by; none of these kept us from catching up on R&R.
Grocery/Errands: Junction is a small town with very few shopping options. There is a local grocery store, but we never visited it. Many of the restaurants are shut down as well. We’d recommend arriving with supplies, but if you forget something, you’d probably be able to find what you needed after some searching.
Dog Friendly: The city park is dog friendly, but they have multiple signs stating “Dogs must be kept on leash.” River had a blast playing in the grass and chasing sticks in the water.
Entertainment: After months in the desert, watching the water roll by was enough entertainment for us. There’s not much to do here, but from the park we hiked into town and explored the local history.
