This week our “Five for Friday” topic is all about travel gear for dogs. We love having a furry travel companion, but it took us a little trial & error to figure out what gear works best.

Below you’ll find a list of items that work best for us and our 50lbs pup. We want to hear what works for y’all, too! Be sure to comment your favorite pieces of doggie travel gear.

#1 – Harness

Having the right harness is essential for our doggie travels. We currently use a Ruffwear harness with front and back hooks. Having two hooks is a must for us – we use the front hook when walking in crowded, urban areas and the back hook to give River more freedom when walking.

We also like the Kurgo and Mighty Paw harness because they offer a sewn-in handle for more control.

#2 – Collapsable Bowl

Collapsable bowls are great for travel days and hiking days. They’re light weight, sturdy, and easy to use. We must admit, the bowls aren’t ideal for everyday use. But, when we all need a water break on a long hike, the bowls are super convenient.

#3 – Tie-Out Line

Whether we’re boondocking in nature or camping at a park, its very important to follow leash rules. Having a tie-out line allows River to roam around our site, but no further. The 25 foot line also is handy when we want to keep her out of harms way from cacti and other dangerous flora.

We don’t recommend leaving a pup unsupervised on a line. But, for us, its an easy way to let River roam around our campsite.

#4 – Outdoor Bed

An outdoor bed is another essential piece of doggie travel gear. It allows our pup to comfortably lay in the sun no matter what terrain we’re in. We currently use a pretty inexpensive bed with little padding. River’s hoping we upgrade soon to something with a little more cushion!

#5 – Kurgo Chew Toy

This Kurgo Chew Toy has been holding strong for over a year! With a hollow inside, we can fill it with peanut butter and dog treats – allowing River to be entertained for hours. If we plan on leaving her alone in the camper for a while, the Kurgo is our go-to form of entertainment. The durability has been great, too – no other toy has lasted this long!
