After a 4-day weekend of festival camping at the Telluride Blues & Brews Fest, we were ready to enjoy full hookups and a little peace & quiet. Lightner Creek Campground in Durango, Colorado was just what we were looking for!
We’d like to give a huge “thank you & shout out” to Lightner Creek for hosting our five-day visit.
Here’s the Breakdown:
Location: Durango, Colorado
GPS: 37.2943, -107.9489
Date / Temp: We camped here for 5 nights in mid September and the temps were mild with daytime highs in the 60s and nights in the 30s. The fall-colored landscape was beautiful.
Amenities: The campground offers multiple bath-houses, a dog park, a laundry facility, heated pool, and a covered pavilion. There are back in & pull through sites with many trees throughout the grounds.
Wifi / Cell: We received a strong 4G LTE signal with both AT&T and T-Mobile while using our cell booster. The campground offers free wifi – at our site we couldn’t connect, but at the office it works well.
Noise: Lightner Creek Campground is very quiet. Although some of the sites are close together, everyone was quiet & respectful (and the many trees helped keep it serene).
Grocery / Errands: Downtown Durango is about 5 miles away, and had everything we needed to complete our errands. There are multiple grocers, hardware stores and gas stations.
Dog Friendly: This park is dog friendly and river loved the dog park. Its fenced in, large enough to play fetch and has fun obstacles, too! We made daily visits to play in the doggy area. It was, by far, River’s favorite part of the campground!
Entertainment: Mesa Verde is the big attraction to the west, but since we already visited that National Park, we opted to trek north to the Million Dollar Highway and spend a day in Silverton. There’s so much to do in Durango – we decided to extend our stay. The historic town has hip shops, great eats and is super friendly to bicyclers & pedestrians.

Sounds great – I am always on the lookout for campgrounds with dog parks for my little buddy! On the river is a big plus. Do you think a big rig can fit easily there? (44-foot 5th wheel pulled by a 27-foot semi truck).
