Durango is one of our absolute favorite towns in the USA. After four years of full time RV travel, we’re always thinking, “maybe we’ll settle down in Durango someday.”
Needless to say, we’ve camped at a LOT of campgrounds in the area and are excited to share our 7 favorites with you. If you’re extra adventurous, at the end of the article we’ll also share our favorite boondocking (FREE CAMPING) site near Durango with you!

RV Park in Durango
Lightner Creek Campground
Price: $38 and up
Why You’ll Love It: The campground offers multiple bath-houses, a dog park, a laundry facility, heated pool, and a covered pavilion. There are back in & pull through sites with many trees throughout the grounds.
Downtown Durango is about 5 miles away. The park gave us plenty of “peace on quiet” while still being near the action.
What’s The Word: NYParcels on Campground Reviews says, “We picked this campground, because we were looking for shade and closer to Durango than the place we stayed in Bayfield. We are ecstatic that we found this place! The new owner, as of December 2107, takes great pride in her campground.”
Durango RV Parks Vibe: 8.2/10 Great locations with lots of surrounding nature.
La Plata County Fairground
Price: $25
Why You’ll Love It: The La Plata Country Fairground RV Park has an awesome location. Additionally, it’s big rig friendly and relatively inexpensive. You may not have the most scenic views, but you’ll have water, sewer and electric on site and easy access to Durango.
One of our favorite things about Durango is the amazing trail system, and this fairground has direct access to the trails!

What’s The Word: Jglow on Campendium says, “We didn’t make a reservation and just stopped by to see if they had any availability, and they did for one night (July 3rd 2019). Nothing special at all as far as accommodations, but being able to stay in Durango for $25 was exactly what we were looking for. The camp area is a large gravel lot with water and electric at the sites.”

Durango RV Parks Vibe: 6.9/10 Cheap, easy & close to the action!
United Campground of Durango
Price: $41 and up
Why You’ll Love It: United Campground of Durango takes you back to the good ol’ days of camping. From the A-frame style clubhouse to the train that runs past the campground, you’ll get a heavy dose of nostalgia here.
Tucked back in the woods, United Campground has plenty of nature vibes. The sites can run a little small, so be clear with your rig size upon booking.
The amenities include a heated pool, remodeled bath house and a laundry facility.
What’s The Word: Paul on Campendium says, “Several of the Durango Silverton steam powered trains pass through the campground in the morning and evening. Fun to watch. A trolley bus stops on the road adjacent to the campground every 20 minutes and will take you to downtown Durango. Sites close to the highway have moderate traffic noise.”
Durango RV Parks Vibe: 7.6/10 Classic campground vibes!
Alpen Rose RV Park
Price: $55 and up
Why You’ll Love It: Located just north of town, Alpen Rose RV Park has attention to detail when it come to park maintenance. The landscaping is well kept and the grounds are clean.
The sites are large full hook up spots, packed in pretty tight.
What’s The Word: Our Someday Is Now on Campendium says, “We stayed in Durango for a week, and really liked the park. The owners were very friendly, and it has the largest dog area we’ve seen. plenty of room to run! The store is well stocked with the basics and a good selection of RV supplies. Free Coffee and Popcorn all day.”
Durango RV Parks Vibe: 6.5/10 Customer service and staff attentiveness is great!
Durango KOA
Price: $42 and up
Why You’ll Love It: The Durango KOA is family friendly and has a lot of amenities. It’s labeled “Holiday Edition” which signifies the best KOAs in the brand. If you don’t know, we love KOA parks (here are the 5 most awesome KOAs in the USA).
Onsite you’ll find a heated pool, dog park, mini golf, community fire ring, herb garden and more!
What’s The Word: Airstream Chicago on Campendium says, “Super friendly staff and the back-in sites have better spacing than your average KOA with decent tree separation. We were in the middle of the park and highway noise was audible all hours of the day even with our windows closed. It was tolerable, but a bummer.”
Durango RV Parks Vibe: 8.5/10
Westerly RV Park
Price: $39 and up
Why You’ll Love It: Everyone raves about the friendly staff at Westerly RV Park. Additionally, there’s a hot spring facility right across the street (the RV park provides a hot springs discount)!
The onsite amenities include – full hook up sites, horse shoe pit, laundry and nearby trail access.
What’s The Word: Renee on Campendium says, “Cozy and comfortable spot RIGHT ACROSS from Trimble Hot Springs. You get coupons for the hot springs when you check in. Our slip was a back in on the far side from the office against the creek in the corner. Great spot! We had a lawn and picnic table. Host was funny and informative.”
Durango RV Parks Vibe: 9.1/10 Friendly host & hot spring access – that’s a huge win!
Junction Creek Campground
Price: $24 and up
Why You’ll Love It: This is a National Forest site – that means it’s got all the authentic campground vibes. The sites are located in the beautiful San Juan forest and have lots of privacy.
Most of the camping is dry (no hook ups), but a few spots offer electricity.
As per the National Forest Service: A pavilion, horseshoe pits, volleyball court, and electrical hookups are provided. There also are 2 family picnic sites available on a first-come, first-served basis.
What’s The Word: Zamia Ventures on Campendium says, “The quiet forest setting of this campground is a wonderland of birds, deer, and squirrels, but our favorite thing about it was the enormous sites. Other than the site directly across from us on the other side of the campground loop, the nearest neighbors must have been at least 50 feet away.”
Durango RV Parks Vibe: 10/10 Who needs full hook ups when you have so much nature!
Free Camping Near Durango
If you’re into exploring a little more off-grid, check out this free camping site west of Durango. It’s located on Cherry Creek Road, up a slightly steep hill. We saw Class C’s and 5th Wheels camping there.
