11 Nostalgic Road Trip Snacks from the ’90s
The ’90s were a simpler time… especially if you were a kid! Great TV shows, great music, and, most importantly: great snacks.
Any 90’s kid (and parent) that ever took a road trip with their family will be familiar with these snacks, and you can even still get most of them today to relive your 90’s nostalgia.
Let’s dive in!
1. String Cheese
String cheese… yum! A delicious and interactive snack that was simple to throw in the cooler for a road trip. Who else tried to peel the smallest strips possible while keeping them intact? String cheese was meant to be “stringed”, not bitten directly into. I’m looking at you, string cheese biters.
2. Fruit By The Foot
Arguably one of the coolest snacks to ever come out of the 90’s, Fruit by the Foot made one of the best road trip snacks! With trivia and tongue twisters on the wrapper and different flavors and colors, Fruit By The Foot was (and still is) ‘3 feet of fun’!
3. The Vegetables Mom Brought Along
Ah, yes. The most boring road trip snack of all time… veggies mom brought from home. Whether it was baby carrots or celery and peanut butter… no thanks! But, if your experience was anything like mine, this line might be familiar: “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.” Now, eat your veggies!
4. Planters Cheese Balls
Planters cheese balls were not only fun to eat – they were fun to throw at your siblings too! Addictive and cheesy, cheese balls were one of the best snacks of the ’90s. Even though they were discontinued for years, you can now score them for a limited time.
5. Combos
A perfect solution to a 90’s road trip snack attack: Combos! Combos combined either a cracker or a pretzel with a filling of… stuff? A flavored filling ranging from cheddar cheese, to salsa, to pizza. Of course, everyone knows the best flavor was pepperoni pizza!
6. Little Debbie Oatmeal Pie (That mom thought was healthy)
Oatmeal creme pies… you either love them or you hate them, but one thing is for certain: if you’re a 90’s kid, you definitely had them. These soft, sugary pies were definitely never a health food – but likely because of the oatmeal, moms sure seemed to think so!
7. Sunny D
Sunny D: the best tasting orange juice that your parents thought was healthy that was actually nothing like orange juice at all. Sunny D is a quintessential 90’s kid drink – and there were even 2 flavors to choose from: Florida or California. Whether you opted for the tangy taste or the sweet taste, Sunny D was an excellent road trip refreshment and had all 90’s kids dreaming about that coastal life.
8. Candy Cigarettes
My… how times have changed! Candy cigarettes are one of the wildest candies to ever exist, simply for the fact that they had young children pretending to smoke. Still, they were tasty and fun. You can still purchase them today, although they are harder to find. A pack of candy cigarettes could keep a kid entertained on even the longest road trip!
9. Gas Station Slice of Pizza
Sometimes hard as a rock, sometimes covered in grease, and sometimes hours old… but few road trip snacks could beat that slice of gas station pizza! Every 90’s kid knows that even when pizza is bad, it’s still good.
10. Ritz Crackers and Easy Cheese Spray
If your parents let you have ritz crackers and cheese whiz in the car, you were one of the lucky ones! This snack combo was delicious, filling, and could keep you entertained for hours. Whether you tried to see how high you could pile the cheese whiz on your cracker or you spent your time making little cheese cracker sandwiches for your whole family – this snack was awesome.
11. Lunchables
Lunchables were the ultimate 90’s road trip snack… or even meal! There’s just something so fun about putting together your own meal – whether it was pizza or crackers, and then getting your snack and drink to go with it. Lunchables were great for all the kids who wanted different things, and probably saved our parents the headache of having to worry about it all!
