The Ultimate Poconos Camping Guide for 2021

The Ultimate Poconos Camping Guide for 2021

If you’re of a certain age, you’ll remember the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania for the resorts that enticed honeymooners to soak in champagne glass hot tubs.

Now, the Poconos are known for outdoor adventure all year round, including Poconos camping.

The Geography at Poconos

The Poconos encompass over 2,500 square miles in the northeastern Pennsylvania area. The highest summit in the region is Kistler Ledge, which reaches over 2,215 feet.

The Delaware River cuts through the Poconos and comprises some of the 170 miles of rivers in the mountains. There are a variety of great highways to get from one place to another.

Communities Around Poconos

The Pocono Mountains are known for tourists visiting from cities only a few hours away, but now those tourists are moving into the region causing a spike in population for many communities.

The towns are spread out and there isn’t one major city. Six regions divide the Poconos based on geographic descriptions, for example, mountain region, lake region, Delaware River region, etc.

Recreational Activities

When traveling to the Pocono Mountains have your bucket list of adventures at the ready.

Whitewater rafting, biking, hiking and swimming to paintball, mountain adventures high in the tree canopy and skydiving, Pocono Mountains have all you could want and more.

The Best Pocono Camping Spots

The following four campgrounds made the ultimate Pocono Camping Guide for 2020.

Promised Land State Park

Promised Land State Park is located in Greentown, surrounded by the Delaware State Forest. Enjoy fishing, boating and swimming on two lakes and plenty of hiking trails.

There is a museum with interactive environmental education programs with information about the park and surrounding area.

The campground has 390 sites with either 30-amp or 20-amp power, a host of recreational options like swimming, boat rentals and a playground for the kids. Each site comes with a picnic table and fire ring.

Not all sites are level. Facilities include restrooms, trash facilities, dump station, showers and potable water. Pets are welcome in certain sections of the campground.

Pricing at this and all Pennsylvania campgrounds are ala carte. There is a base price for residents and one for non-residents. There are additional prices for electricity, water, sewer, pets, and extra vehicles.

Mount Pocono Campground

The next great Pocono camping can be found at Mount Pocono Campground in Mt. Pocono. This privately-owned campground has 191 sites with many that are big rig friendly and pull-thru.

Mount Pocono Campground has a variety of hookups including water and sewer. It also offers Wi-Fi. For recreation, swim in the pool, play on the playground or visit the two-story indoor entertainment center with pool tables, ping pong tables, fitness room, and card/game room. For dog lovers, don’t miss the dog run.

Mount Pocono Campground offers club discounts like AAA and military. Rates start at $45 for full hookups or $30 for no hookups. There are weekly and monthly rates. All rates are based on two people. There is a charge for additional guests. For reservations, call 570-839-8950.

Tobyhanna State Park

Tobyhanna State Park is a 140-site campground open between April and mid-October. The state park offers many recreational activities like swimming, boating, horseshoes, a playground and fishing areas.

Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table, and pets are welcome. Hookups include 50-amp, 30-amp, dry camping, and partial hookups. The facilities are well-appointed with a dump station, recycling, showers, restrooms, trash area, and it’s all ADA accessible.

Tobyhanna State Park is located in Tobyhanna, in northeastern Pennsylvania. One interesting bit of information is that visitors exploring remote and undeveloped areas of the park may come across unexploded artillery shells, and are asked to call the park office to report them when found.

The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation & Natural Resources sets the price. It is the same ala carte pricing as Promised Land State Park.

Silver Lake Road

Silver Lake Road is located in the Delaware State Forest in Dingmans Ferry, PA. The Delaware State Forest District Office requires a permit to camp – it costs nothing, though. There are many trails and outdoor activities to participate in, for example, hiking, ATV riding, hunting in season, and biking.

The camping sites are pet friendly. Sites are dispersed and dry camping only. Everything is carry in, carry out. Scouting the road before taking a larger rig into the camping area is advised.
