7 Amazing Waterfalls in Alabama

Alabama is home to beautiful limestone rocks, great beaches, and lots of forest. It’s a fun place to visit for its history, food and southern hospitality.

Most travelers (and even some locals) don’t know that Alabama has a lot of cool waterfalls!

As avid RVers, my wife and I love hunting the best waterfalls across the USA. That’s why in today’s article, we’re also sharing the best nearby campsites to each of these waterfalls.

#1 DeSoto Falls

Desoto Falls, located at the Desoto State Park is a beautiful 104-foot waterfall. The waterfall drops into a lake that you can swim in. The waterfall cascades down the limestone rock giving it a majestic look. This water is the most visited in all of Alabama.

Location: 7104 Desoto Pkwy NE, Fort Payne, AL 35967

Great Nearby Campsite: Desoto State Park – Improved Campsites

If you are looking for nearby camping, you can stay at Desoto State Park campgrounds. There are 94 full hookup sites that can accommodate large RV’s. This site has lots of trees and space that provide the wilderness and relaxation.

#2 Eagle Creek Falls

Located in Sipsey Wilderness, Eagle Creek Falls is a beautiful cascading falls. Totalling at 20 feet in height, the water runs down the limestone rock like steps. To get to this Alabama waterfall you have to make the 1-mile hike. It’s an easy hike and well covered in trees.

Location: Co Rd 60, Double Springs, AL 35553

Great Nearby Campsite: McDougle Hunt Camp

McDougle Hunt Camp is a free campground in the Sipsey Wilderness. This campground is primitive, so you will need to be self-sustaining. There is enough space for RV’s up to 30’. It’s very quiet and not crowded.

#3 Noccalula Falls

Noccalula Falls is located in Noccalula Falls Park & Campground. This 90-foot waterfall is the perfect backdrop for this area. The limestone rock behind the waterfall has been eroded away to form a cave.

There are lots of trails in this area that showcase the history from the natives that lived here to Civil War carvings.

Location: 1500 Noccalula Rd, Gadsden, AL 35904

Great Nearby Campsite:  Noccalula Falls Campground

The Noccalula Falls campground is the perfect place to stay while visiting this waterfall. It’s located within walking distance of the waterfall. They have full hookup sites along with partial hookup sites as well. The sites are large enough for large RV’s.

#4 Cheaha Falls

Cheaha Falls is located in the forest outside of Lineville. To get to this waterfall you have to make the 3-mile round trip hike which is rated easy. The waterfall is 20’ tall and appears as if it was coming out of the rocks instead of over it.

The hike is nice and well forested. It’s a great way to spend the day with family.

Great Nearby Campsite: Cheaha State Park Campground

This campground is the perfect place to stay when visiting this waterfall. It’s a large campground that has sites big enough for 40’ trailers. They have full hookups and are well spaced out from each other.

#5 Upper Caney Creek Falls

Located just outside of Ashridge, Upper Caney Creek Falls is a beautiful place to visit. This waterfall isn’t very tall but the 2-mile round trip hike keeps it a very quiet place.

You do cross the creek a few times so it might be good to wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet if you accidentally slip in.

McDougle Hunt Camp is a free campground in the Sipsey Wilderness. Because this campground is primitive, make sure you are self-sustaining. There is enough space for RV’s up to 30’.

#6 Dismals Canyon Falls

Dismals Canyon Falls is located in the Dismals Canyon National Landmark Site. The waterfall itself isn’t very big but what makes this area so special is the hike.

The easy hike follows the canyon amongst the trees and mossy rocks. This is also home to the dismalite bug that can only be found here. At night it lights up with a blue hint that makes this place magical.

Great Nearby Campsite: Twin Forks Campground

Twin Forks Campground is a great place to stay while in this area. There are hookups and a view of the lake. All the sites are well spaced out and very quiet. There are lots of trees for shade. You can even go swimming in the lake.

#7 Peavine Falls

Peavine Falls is located in the Oak Mountain State Park. This waterfall is a spring and stands at 65 feet. There is a short hike to get to this falls but it’s worth the trek.

You’ll find lots of trees for shade and at the bottom of the falls is a small pool you can cool yourself off in.

Great Nearby Campsite: Oak Mountain State Park Campground

This campground is a great place to stay while visiting the Peavine Falls. There are lots of hiking trails in this area and a lake for swimming and fishing.

The campground has large sites with full hookups and partial hookups. There are lots of trees for shade and it’s a very relaxing place to be.
