How To Convince Your Wife To Go RV Camping

How To Convince Your Wife To Go RV Camping

If the thought of traveling the country appeals to you, you have probably considered RV camping. There is really no better way to do it!

But if your wife (or significant other) isn’t as into the idea, what can you do?

Here are a few strategies to convince your wife to go RV camping. If she has concerns, the following tips will definitely make for a more successful RV experience. (For both of you!)

Convincing Your Partner To Go RV Camping

We’re going to start with the disclaimer that you should respect your partner’s opinion. They probably has very valid reasons for not wanting to RV.

But if they’re on the fence, here are a few tips to make the experience more enjoyable. If you help your partner see how fun RVing can be, they’ll be much more on board with the idea.

1. Don’t Have An RV Yet? Try Renting Different Styles That She Picks Out To Find a Rig She Can’t Wait To Camp In

If you don’t already have an RV, picking something your wife will love is a great starting point. She may envision camping in a dark, musty, old trailer with classy 90s upholstery and wallpaper for days. But, we both know that RVs have come a long way. Some of them are nicer than a sticks and bricks house!

One way to help get your wife on board is to show her different styles of RV. You can do this by renting different RVs from somewhere like Outdoorsy or RVshare. Once she finds an RV she loves, you’ll be able to look for one of your own.

And if she still isn’t convinced after renting, you just saved yourself a LOT of money by waiting to buy.

Pro Tip: Here’s how much RV rentals usually cost.

2. Share RV Camping Videos To Show Her How Awesome It Is

Another great way to convince your wife to go camping is to share some videos with her. RV YouTubers and Vloggers have taken the world by storm. Watching their videos will give you a sneak peek at how great RV camping is.

Here’s a tip, show them this video of the 20 most beautiful free-campsites. This will get them excited to travel and make your bank account happy.

If you can’t convince your wife to RV just yet, she might change her mind after watching videos. This could at least pique her interest and may convince her to try a rental or two.

3. Show Her Reference Articles or Videos To Ease Her Trepidations

It is totally understandable to have concerns regarding RVing. After all, it is a huge lifestyle change. Your wife may have concerns regarding safety, repairs, costs, storage, and so on. The good thing is, there are plenty of resources to manage these concerns.

By showing your wife articles addressing her concerns, she will feel more confident and comfortable.

There is a lot to learn with RVing, but luckily there is also a wealth of information available for free online.

4. Be Patient and Allow Time To Get Used To The Idea

Big life choices will naturally take some time to get used to. RV camping is no different.

It is a big financial and time commitment to purchase and use an RV. You both probably have a weekend routine you have settled into. And RVing on the weekend could disrupt that.

One of the best ways to convince your wife to start RV camping with you is to be patient. We know you are excited to get out there. But your wife may just need a little more time to get used to the idea.

5. Be Willing To Compromise

We don’t need to tell you that marriage is full of compromises! If you’ve been married for any length of time, you already know that. RV camping is just one more area of life where compromising can be a good thing.

If your wife hates rugged camping, for example, try staying at RV resorts. If she is worried about the expense and upkeep required for a larger RV, try starting with something smaller, like a travel trailer.

Having a frank discussion about concerns is a great way to make compromises that will leave you both happy.

6. Let Her Choose The Destinations

This tip goes along with compromising. If you let your wife choose where she wants to travel, she will be more likely to buy-in. You’ll get to enjoy camping and she will be happy with the destination. It is a win-win.

As she gets more used to the idea of camping, you may be able to expand your destination list. But at the start, be flexible in where you travel.

It is cliché, but true: happy wife, happy life.

8. Suggest Short Weekend Trips At First

It is no secret that we love RVing. And like many people, we have made our entire life about RVing. But not everyone is quick to make the jump.

One of the best ways to get your wife on board with RV camping is to start small.

Starting with weekend trips is low commitment. Your wife won’t feel like she is being dragged into anything. And once she tries it, she’ll probably love RVing! That means next time it will take less convincing to get her out. And she might even be ready for a longer cross-country adventure.

9. Let Her Know You’ll Handle All The Work

Setting up and breaking down camp can be a chore. And if your wife needs some convincing to RV, don’t even think about sharing the work of the black tank. Chances are, your wife does a LOT of work around the house already. And she probably doesn’t feel too excited about the prospect of adding even more chores to her list for the weekends.

To help convince her to give RVing a try, let her know you’ll handle everything yourself. That way all she has to do is tag along and enjoy.

If you’re feeling extra ambitious, this is what an RV mechanic says will break first in your RV.

There are many systems inside every RV, but some are much more likely to fail first.

If All Else Fails – Take A Trip With The Guys

If you have tried all these tips without success, please stop trying to convince her. Your wife is allowed to not like everything you do. And as much as we can’t believe it, some people just aren’t into RVing.

But just because your wife doesn’t want to RV, doesn’t mean you can’t get out and enjoy now and then. You can always plan an RV trip with the guys.

Since there are options for renting RVs, it won’t cost a lot more than a week at a hotel would be.

Get out there and camp!

Camping with your wife is tons of fun! She may have some hesitation or trepidation at the start. If she seems to be on the fence but not totally convinced, there are lots of ways to get her on board.

Basically, showing her how amazing RVing is can usually do the trick.

Not only is RVing a great way to get out and explore new places, but it is also a good way to spend time together. If you both love RVing, your road trips are bound to be more fun.

And if you try RVing and your wife is miserable, time to call it quits 😂

I HATED tent camping. When my husband started discussing getting a camper for our pickup, I said I had to have hot & cold water, a REAL stove, and a sink deep enough to wash dishes. We looked at many pop up campers and the one WE decided on he adapted. After 3 years of trekking National Parks in it, we sold it (and the little portable potty that fit in a closet) to a single lady with the same dream we had. Now we have graduated to a 16’ haul-behind with its own bathroom and shower. Lesson I learned? If you boil down exactly why you hate camping and work on fixing those issues together, it can be the best times you’ll ever have!

And why I’m a 71 year old batchelor and no kids. I made sure of that! I could never convince any of my too many women to live a life of adventure and none of them could convince me to settle down and raise a family. It does seem that today’s younger women like adventures more than when I was young, but when a baby comes along most op out of the life. Just as the two of you did since you too are no longer on the road.
Comment on the “Happy wife, happy life” cliche. Way is it the man who is supposed to make her happy? Why shouldn’t the woman have to make the man happy?
Lol! Now you see why I’ve been happily not married, not tied down in “The Baby Trap”.

  3. Mike K says:

Never a problem here. Wife and I grew up camping with our parents. Our kids have done the same.
Tent camping was out for both of us so we to started with a tent trailer. So after a few travel trailers, a few 5th wheels a MH we have settled with our used 2011
Mobile Suites 36′ 5th wheel as our last RV.
Very easy and comfortable to spend three to four months in it away from the desert heat in the summertime.
