Treehouse Resort Coming to This National Park

Have you ever wanted to stay at a treehouse resort? Now multiple resorts around the country feature treehouses!

Treehouse hotels combine modern convenience with the childlike love of relaxing in the trees and nature. These resorts can also be the perfect venue for a family gathering or wedding venue.

Let’s jump in and find out more about treehouse resorts!

The Sanctuary Treehouse Resort is Coming to the Smoky Mountains

A new resort is coming to Tennessee, just a short distance from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Sanctuary Treehouse Resort is the brainchild of Brian and Amanda Jensen. It’ll be the first of its kind in Eastern Tennessee.

All the units will be treehouses of different sizes with many amenities and activities incorporated into the resort. The Jensens were inspired to build a resort after staying in a single treehouse in another state. They plan to open this summer 2022.

Tell Me More About The Sanctuary Treehouse Resort

The treehouse resort sits on 40 acres of land close to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The treehouses will all have views of the mountains and two 18-hole golf courses. They can accommodate up to six guests, and staff can use a bridge to attach units for larger groups.

Each treehouse will have unique amenities such as spiral slides, escape hatches, and custom drink chutes from the kitchen to the porch. In addition, the resort will be golf cart access only.

The Jensens plan to eventually include more amenities such as a beautifully lit enchanted forest, scavenger hunts, local storytellers, and an inground outdoor hot tub.

What is the Largest Treehouse in the World?

Horace Burgess started building the largest treehouse in the world in the 1990s. He bought some land in Collierville, Tennessee, and decided to make the treehouse his project.

The trees on his property first inspired him. He had a vision of what his treehouse would look like in one of the bigger trees on his property. Burgess had a family and a job, though, so he exhausted his money and materials a couple of years into his project.

Burgess noted that he then became a minister and “turned his life over to God.” He claims that God showed him a vision of what it should look like. He also said that if he knew how big god wanted it to be, he would have talked him out of it!

It took him 11 years to build the largest treehouse in the world. The house spread through seven trees and rose 100 feet into the sky with approximately 80 rooms. Burgess estimated it at around 10,000 square feet. He wasn’t sure of its exact size as he built it without a plan or blueprints.

The treehouse was a huge tourist attraction for many years. Unfortunately, visitors did not treat Burgess’s project with respect. Eventually, vandals covered every inch of the treehouse in graffiti.

There was also some destruction by vandals. He had to hire 24-hour security to watch over the treehouse. Then the fire marshal closed it down because it didn’t meet the building codes for a tourist attraction. Sadly, on October 22, 2019, The Minister’s Treehouse burned to the ground.

The Mohicans, of course, is in the Mohican Valley in Ohio. It’s a family-owned and operated business on 77 acres with nine state-of-the-art treehouses, a few cabins, and a wedding venue. They’ve also integrated sustainability values into their operations.

Many of their units include radiant heat, passive solar design, and on-demand hot water. They use only non-toxic cleaning supplies and environmentally-friendly toiletries and paper products. Pete Nelson, star of the Discovery Channel’s show “Treehouse Masters,” designed two of their treehouses. Their Little Red Treehouse was even featured on the show!

California Coast

The Post Ranch Inn is on the Big Sur coast in California, about 150 miles south of San Francisco. The Inn offers a variety of accommodations, including treehouses. The treehouses are on stilts about nine feet off the ground, with a stairway to each entrance. Each room features a king bed, desk, fireplace, window seat, and a skylight to watch the stars.

Reservations also include a complimentary daily breakfast and mini-bar, guided nature hikes, access to infinity and swimming pools, and complementary activities such as yoga. The Post Ranch Inn requires guests to be 18 or older.

Montana’s Mountains

Kati and Darin Robison own the Montana Treehouse Retreat outside Whitefish, Montana. They’re just 10 miles from Glacier Park International Airport and have two treehouses available to rent.

The first is the Meadowlark, featured on the DIY network, Time, and HGTV. It sleeps two comfortably, has heat and air, a bedroom loft with a Tempurpedic queen mattress, 1.5 bathrooms, WiFi, and a full kitchen.

The Raven’s Nest is the second treehouse that sleeps four in private rooms and includes a gas fireplace, heat and air, and a full kitchen.

The treehouse retreat is 25 minutes from Glacier National Park and 15 minutes to the top of Whitefish Mountain Resort. There is dining and shopping in the Flathead Valley as well.
