This Is the Best All Around Truck of 2022

If you’re searching for the perfect truck to haul your new Grand Design Reflection or Keystone Cougar, you’ve probably looked at the Ford F-250 or the Chevrolet Silverado 2500.

Both of them have long track records and plenty of loyal owners. But if you haven’t considered the GMC Sierra HD 2500, you’re missing out on the best all-around truck of 2022.

Let’s look at why the comfortable, affordable, capable Sierra 2500 should make the top of your list.

What Is the Best All-Around Truck of 2022?

The GMC Sierra HD 2500 offers best-in-class heavy-duty cargo bed volume and front head and leg room. This provides ample space to haul everything you need and room for a family to travel comfortably.

The Sierra 2500 also features the industry’s first available transparent trailer view and the world’s first six-function MultiPro tailgate.

About the Sierra 2500

The Sierra 2500 comes in five trim packages, two bed lengths, and three cab sizes. GMC also offers a gas and diesel engine option in the Sierra HD line.

Additionally, the sheer size of the Sierra 2500 makes the interior accommodations comfortable while having the same capabilities of towing and hauling as most other trucks in its class.

Trim Packages

The available trim packages include the Sierra HD Pro, SLE, and SLT. The HD trim comes equipped with a 6.6L V8 gas engine. And the SLE and SLT have a Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 Engine with Allison 10-Speed Automatic Transmission.

These trims also come with Apple CarPlay compatibility and the MultiPro tailgate. The Sierra HD Pro also has the option of adding the MultiPro tailgate.

Furthermore, the Sierra HD AT4 and Sierra HD Denali can also have the Duramax 6.6L Turbo-Diesel V8 Engine with Allison 10-Speed Automatic Transmission. In addition, these trims come equipped with a multicolor 15-inch diagonal head-up display with an off-road inclinometer.

The Sierra HD AT4 comes with a standard X31 off-road package with twin-tube Rancho shocks and skid plates. And the Sierra HD Denali features luxurious forge perforated leather seating surfaces, heated and ventilated front bucket seats, and a Bose premium sound system.

Specs

Depending on the engine, the Sierra 2500 will have various capabilities. The 4WD crew cab standard box with a gas engine will provide a maximum payload of 3,760 pounds.

Plus, it has a maximum conventional hitch rating of 14,500 pounds and a maximum fifth wheel and gooseneck hitch rating of 16,620 pounds.

The long box Sierra 2500 with a gas engine will provide similar numbers with a maximum payload of 3,862 pounds. It has a maximum conventional hitch rating of 14,500 pounds and a maximum fifth wheel and gooseneck hitch rating of 16,520 pounds.

However, the specs for the Sierra 2500 diesel engine will substantially increase the towing capacities while reducing the payload capacity. There isn’t much difference between the standard box and long box vehicles.

The maximum payload ranges between 3,500 and 3,600 pounds. However, the maximum conventional, fifth-wheel, and gooseneck hitch ratings are all 18,500 pounds.

Features

The Sierra HD AT4 and Denali trims feature live-axle suspension, which includes two-stage, semi-elliptic multi-leaf rear springs. This means a more balanced payload and improved ride quality.

Additionally, GMC installed a 28-inch cooling fan to send dense, cool air to the hood scoop and grille to maintain an optimal operating temperature. In addition, the Diesel After-Run feature cools down the engine after heavy usage.

Depending on the trim package, the Sierra 2500 will come equipped with up to 15 different camera views like HD surround vision, a rear camera mirror, and a bed view camera. These offer optimal views all around the truck.

Further trailering technology integrates ASA Electronics iN∙Command Control System with Global Connect. For compatible trailers, owners can monitor water tank levels and control the HVAC system through the myGMC Mobile App.

Are GMC Sierra 2500HD Reliable?

According to Consumer Reports, the GMC Sierra 2500 HD had “better than average reliability.” This is compared to Ford’s F-250 and F-350 models, which had average reliability.

Edmunds gives the Sierra 2500 an 8.5/10 rating for towing and capability “thanks to an abundance of big in-bed tie-downs, the trick six-position MultiPro tailgate, smartly placed bed sidesteps, robust hauling capability, and plenty of cargo space inside the cabin.”

The HD line also “makes towing easy with standard extendable tow mirrors, a remarkable 15-view towing-camera system, and a tire pressure monitoring system for a trailer’s tires.”

GMC offers a three-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. However, extensive or repeated repairs are unlikely. The GMC Sierra 2500 is a well-built, reliable truck.

Is the GMC Sierra 2500HD a 3/4-ton?

Yes, the GMC Sierra 2500 is part of the 3/4 ton truck class along with competitors like the Ford F-250, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500, and the RAM 2500.

This truck class offers gas and diesel engines and can tow and haul more than the 1/4 ton trucks like the GMC Sierra 1500, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, and the RAM 1500.

The beefier construction, like stronger suspensions and engines and heavier frames, gives them higher capabilities.

What Gas Mileage Does a GMC 2500 Get?

Like most trucks its size, the Sierra 2500 gets anywhere from 13-14 miles per gallon.

While 3/4-ton trucks have increased towing and payload capacities than their 1/2-ton counterparts, their increased size and weight mean a reduction in fuel efficiency.

So, if you don’t need a Sierra 2500 for towing or hauling purposes, save money on fuel by sticking to a 1/2-ton truck.

These are for the basic trim packages in the Sierra HD 2500 line. The more luxurious Denali starts around $69,600, and the off-road, adventurous AT4 starts around $63,000.

Is a Sierra 2500 Worth It?

The Sierra 2500 is comparable in price and capability to the other 3/4 ton trucks on the market. The Ford F-250 XL, Ford’s most basic trim package, starts at $39,400. The 4WD crew-cab standard box model with a gas engine has a conventional towing rating of 12,500-15,000 pounds, depending on the axle ratio.

So the Sierra 2500 holds its own against one of the top competitors in the truck industry. If you want a truck that’s comfortable and capable, check out the GMC Sierra HD 2500 lineup.
