First, it was created in 1938 with the completion of the Hamilton Dam and Reservoir, which later changed to Lake Buchanan. Second, Old Bluffton is a flooded town that sits at the bottom of the lake. During extreme droughts, there’s a chance you can catch a glimpse of it.

Location
Lake Buchanan sits approximately 55 miles northwest of Austin, Texas. Llano and Burnet are the only towns near the lake. However, the tiny Tow, Texas community sits along the lake’s northwest side. If you find yourself traveling across the state on State Road 29, you’ll drive right by the lake and can even see Buchanan Dam off in the distance.
Size
The lake is 22,333 acres and has 124 miles of shoreline. While Lake Buchanan takes the crown for being the deepest lake in the state, it sits in 17th place on the list of the largest lakes in the state. If you want to visit some of the largest lakes in the state, you’ll need to visit Toledo Bend Reservoir (182,490 acres) and Sam Rayburn Reservoir (112,590 acres).

The lake is a popular spot for various recreational purposes, including swimming, fishing, paddle boating, and kayaking. You’ll likely see a jet ski or two zipping around the waters too. Bring a book and soak up the sun at one of the beaches surrounding the lake. It’s a great place to cool off during the sweltering summer days that Central Texas experiences.

Are There Alligators in Lake Buchanan?
Like many bodies of water in this part of the state, there are alligators in Lake Buchanan. However, there isn’t an increased population of alligators. These alligators rarely have negative interactions and encounters with humans.
Swimming, boating, and other aquatic activities are relatively safe in Lake Buchanan. You’re most likely to catch a glimpse of an alligator bathing on the beach. You and the alligator can go about your days peacefully if you keep your distance.
