The Best and Worst Items on the Whataburger Menu

The Texas-based fast food chain, Whataburger, is taking the nation by storm. The company appears to have shifted into overdrive and is ramping up to further establish itself in the industry.

While they have many delicious items on their menu, not everything is a home run. If you’ve never experienced the deliciousness of Whataburger, you’re missing out.

Today, we’re sharing the best and worst items on the Whataburger menu to help ensure you and your taste buds leave satisfied.

Let’s get started!

About Whataburger

The Whataburger chain was launched in 1950 by an entrepreneur named Harmon Dobson. His goal was to create a burger so delicious that customers would say, “What a burger!” after the first bite. So he opened a hamburger stand on Ayers Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, named Whataburger.

The burger stand was a success, and Dobson looked to expand the business. However, Dobson wasn’t only falling in love with the burger industry in the 1950s. He met his wife, Grace Williamson, and they married in 1955. By the end of the decade, their family and restaurant were growing. Whataburger opened its 21st location, and the Dobsons had three children.

While the company started with a single hamburger stand, there are now more than 890 locations throughout the country. Even though the company has experienced tremendous growth, they remain true to its original vision. According to their website, their burgers use “100% pure, never-frozen beef and serve it on a big, toasted five-inch bun.”

Whataburger has experienced decade after decade of success. Their locations serve hot and fresh food 24/7. They’ve developed a reputation for treating customers right and sticking to the principles that got them to where they are today.

The Best Things to Order at Whataburger

Whether it’s your first or 500th time visiting Whataburger, there are some items you need to try. Let’s look at the Whataburger menu and see what you might want to consider ordering for your next visit.

Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit

There aren’t many better ways to start your day than with a Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit from Whataburger. Ordering this menu item is no ordinary experience. On the first delicious bite, your taste buds will delight in a sensation unlike anything they’ve ever experienced. It’s as close to perfect as you can get.

The Honey Butter Chicken Biscuit has a crunchy texture with just enough salt and sweet honey coating. However, this item is only available on their breakfast menu. So if you want to experience it, arrive before 11 AM, or you’ll miss out.

Onion Rings

Not only does Whataburger focus on the meat of the meal, but their onion rings are a side dish delicious enough to stand on their own. These deep-fried onions are cooked to perfection, resulting in a crisp coating and soft, sweet center. Pair your onion rings with their Spicy Ketchup, and you’ll experience tastes bigger than the Lonestar Star State they call home.

Sweet and Spicy Bacon Burger

Like many Whataburger menu items, the Sweet and Spicy Bacon Burger is a euphoric experience. You’re sure to enjoy every delicious bite. However, this burger isn’t always available on their menu. So you’ll have to keep an eye out for when they’re offering it.

The piece of burger perfection uses American and Monterey Jack cheese atop two beef patties. In addition, they pile three slices of bacon, grilled onions, and mustard onto the sandwich. However, the sweet and spicy taste comes from Whataburger’s special sauce. It has a hint of barbecue flavor, but the brown sugar and cayenne pepper mixture make it unique.

The Worst Things to Order at Whataburger

While Whataburger offers plenty of delicious items to enjoy, a few could be much better. Are they horrible? Absolutely not. However, they do leave much to be desired. Let’s look at some of the worst things to order at Whataburger.

Grilled Chicken Sandwich

The Grilled Chicken Sandwich may save you some calories and inches on your waistline, but it’s not as pleasing to your taste buds. Whataburger does several things well, like serving insanely delicious beef burgers. But chicken sandwiches don’t seem to be their specialty.

Whataburger’s Grilled Chicken Sandwich is doomed from the start. The patty is overly dry, and the texture is what you’d expect if you bit into the rubber sole of your shoes. You can attempt to mask the taste and texture with sauces, but there’s no helping this sandwich. Seriously, if you order this during your next visit, we tried to warn you.

Breakfast Platter

Whataburger’s Breakfast Platter features a buttermilk biscuit, bacon, scrambled eggs, and hash brown sticks. The chain adopts the “everything is bigger in Texas” mentality by offering a tremendous amount of food with the Breakfast Platter. However, quantity doesn’t make up for quality.

The Breakfast Platter doesn’t contain any food worth writing home about. The scrambled eggs lack texture and flavor. The hash browns could stand to cook for longer and are almost always too soft. The highlight of the platter is the paper-thin slices of bacon. While bacon is almost always a win, these pieces are so thin you can practically see through them.

Mushroom Swiss Burger

It’s sad to list a burger as one of the worst menu items at a place known for them. However, the Mushroom Swiss Burger isn’t only one of the worst offerings at Whataburger but of any fast food restaurant. For a sandwich supposedly highlighting mushrooms, this burger surprisingly has a limited amount of them.

In addition, the au jus sauce distracts and covers up any sort of burger taste. You’re left with a bland offering that confuses your taste buds. Seriously, the Mushroom Swiss Burger leaves customers experiencing every negative emotion, including disappointment. Avoid this menu item at all costs unless you need a good cry.

Pro Tip: Start your day off right by eating at the fast food chain with the best breakfast.

Shhhh don’t tell! There are some secret menu items you can get at Whataburger.

Does Whataburger Have a Secret Menu?

Like many fast food restaurants, some of the best Whataburger items aren’t listed on the menu. Some of these items can save you money, while others can provide a heavenly experience. Either way, you have to know exactly what to ask for if you want to order from their secret menu.

Like many of its competitors, Whataburger offers grilled cheese on its secret menu. While it’s nothing special, it’s one of the cheapest items available. The gooey cheese melts between two pieces of golden brown bread that soak up the tastes of a day’s worth of burgers. It’s most definitely not your run-of-the-mill grilled cheese.

You’ll want to wash your meal down with something, and the Hulk is one of the most unique beverages you’ll find. This drink is special to Whataburger because not many other establishments carry the two necessary ingredients. It’s a mixture of Powerade and Vault soda. Most employees will be familiar with how to make this simple but tasty beverage.

Lastly, because Whataburger knows not everyone eats meat, they offer a great vegetarian option. Their veggie burger is far from ordinary. Whataburger places potato sticks in the middle of the sandwich. This secret menu item can allow you to save some calories and meet your particular diet needs.

Is Whataburger Worth a Visit?

The Whataburger menu offers something for just about everyone. Stopping at one of their locations will most likely satisfy your hungry belly. While there are plenty of delicious items to choose from, be sure to choose wisely. Some of the offerings on the menu are a swing and a miss.

But now you know some things to try out and which ones you should avoid on your next visit. Don’t be afraid to try something new, but just not the Mushroom Swiss Burger. Seriously, it’s that bad.
