Coffee is a drink made from roasted, ground seeds of the coffee plant brewed in water. It originated in Sufi shrines in Yemen in the 15th century and spread to the Middle East and Africa. It is now a global commodity, with two billion cups a day consumed in Finland.
The production process of coffee has a significant impact on the cost, as it involves exporting the beans to a roaster, cooking them, selling them to distributors, and reselling them to grocers or cafes.
Cafes have to set prices to make a profit due to overhead, to-go cups, milk, sugar, and flavorings, and specialized machines. They also have to account for competition, even if they make the best cup.
