Arthur Fremont Gilmore purchased the land in 1880 with the intention of using it for a dairy farm. However, he discovered oil and formed the Gilmore Oil Company instead. He charged local farmers 50 cents per day to park on his land and sell their produce, and the number of farmers rapidly grew. In 1952, he sold some of his land to the television production company CBS, and the market became the go-to spot for celebrities recording shows.
In the 1960s, it became LA's most popular tourist attraction, and in the 1980s, it experienced a tremendous amount of growth and change in infrastructure. Today, the market has 120 shops, restaurants, and produce stands, and there is something for everyone to enjoy.
