Free Camping at Durfield Dispersed Near Durango, Colorado

Sometimes you just gotta throw caution to the wind, hit the road, and find yourself a slice of freedom. We did just that, rolling up to Durfield Dispersed outside Durango in our old-school Fiber Stream camper. No hookups, no reservations, no problem.

This spot is raw, wild, and totally free—just how we like it. You’re waking up with nothing but open skies and rugged Colorado mountains, miles from the tourist traps. It’s like you’ve got your own private piece of the Rockies.

The Details About Durfield Dispersed

Durfield Dispersed camping is the real deal, man. There are no designated sites or fancy amenities—just you, your rig, and the open land. It’s primitive camping at its finest. You want peace and quiet? You’ll find it here.

Sure, there are no bathrooms, but who needs ‘em when you’ve got freedom like this? Watch out for the rough roads—unless you’re cruising in a high-clearance rig, you might be in for a bumpy ride. But hey, that’s part of the adventure, right?

Our Personal Experience at Durfield Dispersed

We enjoyed camping on Cherry Creek Road in Durango – but it was time to refill our tanks, so we decided to stay in the area and change up the scenery.

We moved to Durfield BLM, east of Durango.

Location: Durfield BLM – East of Durango

GPS37.219377, -107.699484

Date / Temp: We camped here for three nights in early October. The highs were in the mid-50s, and lows crept into the 30s. The skies were cloudy most of our stay, with rain and hail.

Amenities: This site offers no services and practices a “Pack In, Pack Out” policy.  There is a dump station and water fill-up in town.

Wifi / Cell: We received cell signals with both AT&T and T-Mobile (using our WeBoost Cell Booster). The speeds were terrific.

Noise: This site was pretty quiet. The first night, we camped in complete solitude. There was no road noise from 160 and no traffic on the BLM road. The second night we had neighbors park 50 yards away… not so quiet, but it wasn’t too annoying.

Grocery / Errands: Downtown Durango is 14 miles away and offers all the shopping we needed to complete our chores. There is a central post office and lots of gas stations.

Dog Friendly: This site is dog-friendly. River had a lot of space to play and explore. The town of Durango is also dog-friendly and offers many walking trails.

Entertainment: Hiking, ATVing, and horseback riding are the most popular activities at the campsite. The Durango area offers lots of tourist activities and great dining.

Would We Camp at Durfield Dispersed Again?

Honestly, probably not. Don’t get us wrong—Durfield Dispersed has its charm, especially if you’re chasing that off-the-grid vibe.

But for us, Cherry Creek boondocking near Durango just hits different. It’s got the same rugged beauty and those scenic views we can’t get enough of. So, while Durfield served its purpose for a quick stop, next time we’re in the area, we’ll be setting up camp at Cherry Creek without a second thought.
