The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Towing Capacity

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Towing Capacity

Something old is about to be new again at Jeep because it’s relaunching its iconic Grand Wagoneer. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer returns in 2022 as a powerful and luxurious three-row SUV with an enormous towing capacity.

Towing capacities for vehicles are improving all the time, giving RVers more options for tow vehicles. With a maximum tow capacity of 10,000 lbs, the 2022 Grand Wagoneer might roll smoothly to the head of its class.

Such numbers put it in front of strong competitors like the Ford Expedition, Chevy Tahoe, and Dodge Durango SRT. The promised soft ride and plush features put it in exclusive company, too. It’s also a strong competitor with upscale SUVs like the Lincoln Navigator, Cadillac Escalade, and the Mercedes GLS.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the Wagoneer and its towing capabilities!

About the Jeep Grand Wagoneer

The Jeep Wagoneer was one of the world’s first sports utility vehicles (SUVs). The company produced it from 1963 until 1991 with a special edition (SE) model in 1963.

The company added the “grand” moniker to the name for a more upscale version of the Wagoneer they created from 1984 through ’91, plus the SE version in ’93. After Jeep stopped making its Grand Wagoneer, the Grand Cherokee began its reign as Jeep’s top-of-the-line model. The summer of 2021 will change that because Jeep is reviving both the Grand and standard Wagoneer models.

Jeep says it will “take the premium SUV into unchartered territories of style, comfort, and adventure,” meaning a smoother ride on the highways as well as for rugged off-roading. Four-wheel-drive is standard, and the super SUV will also feature a heavy-duty Dodge RAM 1500 chassis. They’re even building it at the same plant that produces Dodge RAMs in Michigan.

Under the hood is a powerful 6.4L Hemi V8 engine paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Both combine for a total of 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. We’re talking about a full-size SUV that will go from zero to 60 in six seconds! It will also have an independent rear suspension for a comfortable ride and tight handling rather than a solid rear axle.

Other Specs and Features

There’s considerable buzz about what’s going on inside the vehicle, too. It’s packed with high-tech creature comforts, including multiple screens for navigation, climate control, and entertainment options.

It can even integrate your Amazon Fire TV service, so your backseat passengers can start watching a movie at home and pick up where they left off on the road. The sound system in the Series II model might even be better than yours at home as it’s a 1,375-watt McIntosh stereo system with 23 speakers.

RVers may enjoy the spacious layout, too. There are 27.4 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind the third-row seats that expands to almost 80 cubic feet with the seats folded down.

The Wagoneer additionally has an air suspension system that raises and lowers the vehicle up to 10 inches above the ground for your off-roading pleasures. A Selec-Terrain Traction Management System helps you take on different ground surfaces with ease.

There are also some features specifically made for towing. You can opt for integrated trailer brakes along with a trailer rear backup camera. The Jeep Grand Wagoneer has a hitch zoom feature, and a line-up assist, too.

How Much Will the New Jeep Grand Wagoneer Cost?

How much will Jeep’s new premium SUV cost? It might be a cheap shot to say the prices are “grand,” so let’s say these aren’t economy models.

Jeep lists the suggested starting retail prices from $86,995 for Series I up to $103,995 for Series III. There are two other configurations in the works, too. The Series II will cost $93,995, and the Obsidian comes in at  $98,995.

When Will It Be Available?

We haven’t seen an exact unveiling date for the new and improved Jeep Grand Wagoneer. At this point, Jeep has only said it’s coming in the summer of 2021. So, we should see them rolling out soon alongside the rebooted Wagoneer.

Can the New Grand Wagoneer Tow a Camper Trailer?

There’s no question that the new Jeep Grand Wagoneer will have what it takes to be a great tow vehicle. Realistically, it won’t be able to take on every travel trailer that’s out there, as some will be too heavy for any SUV to handle, even this beast!

However, you might be surprised at what will fall safely within the Grand Wagoneer’s towing range. After all, the new Jeep Wagoneer’s towing capacity pushes 10,000 lbs.

What Kinds of RVs Can the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Tow?

With such a high rating, it will pull a few sizable travel trailers. We’re talking classic bumper-pull towable RVs. As you might imagine, fifth-wheel trailers are out of the question because their design requires a particular truck bed hitch.

But you might be surprised at your options when you can tow up to 10,000 pounds! With such a towing capacity, the Grand Wagoneer has the power to take on most small travel trailers. It can even tow some large travel trailers 22 feet and longer, as well as some toy haulers.

Don’t forget to factor in weight for cargo, passengers, and RV water tanks to avoid towing above capacity.

The Grand Wagoneer Might Be Your Perfect Match

For many people, trucks are still the standard for towing an RV, but more people seem to be moving toward SUVs. Jeep is changing with the times, too. The new Jeep Grand Wagoneer won’t have those trademark wood grain panels on its sides. It will, however, have a towing capacity that makes it a suitable match for RVs.
