Who is Joanna Gaines?

Joanna Gaines is a designer, New York Times bestseller, mom of five, and co-owner of the Magnolia brand in Waco, Texas. She’s famous for popularizing “farmhouse-chic” on HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.”

How Did Joanna Gaines Get Started?

Born in Kansas of Korean, Lebanese, and German descent, Joanna Gaines was the target of bullies because of her ethnicity. While attending Baylor University, she worked as an intern for Dan Rather on “48 hours” in New York. 

It was there that she saw people of varying ethnicities for the first time. This experience helped her appreciate and love her Koren heritage. It inspired her to find ways to create beauty for others. 

In 2003, Joanna married Chip Gaines, and the two renovated their first house together that same year. The renovation was a mess, but they learned about home renovation, budgeting, and design. That same year, they opened up Magnolia Market, their first retail store. 

With Chip’s background in construction and Joanna’s affinity for design, the couple expanded their businesses (retail store and renovations). Nine years later, in 2013, “Fixer Upper” aired on HGTV. Then, in 2015, they transformed derelict cotton silos in Waco into an expanded Magnolia Market (Magnolia Market at the Silos.)

Are Chip and Joanna Gaines Still Married?

On May 31, 2003, at the Earle Harrison House in Waco, Texas, Chip and Joanna Gaines tied the knot. In 2017, divorce rumors about the couple began circulating. 

However, the stories were false, and today, the couple is still together and committed to each other and their businesses. The Gaineses have stated that, although their relationship has ups and downs like everyone else’s, they’ve never considered divorce. 

Where Is Joanna Gaines’ Store?

Magnolia Market at the Silos, or Magnolia Market, is located at 601 Webster Ave, Waco, Texas 76706. It has become a tourist attraction, with tens of thousands of visitors stopping by each week. Visitors can stop by for a few hours, spend the entire day, or enjoy an extended visit over several days. 

Shopping at Magnolia Market goes beyond home goods. It includes the Shops at the Silo, boutiques specializing in women’s, men’s, and kids’ and babies’ clothing and provisions. Magnolia also has shops for bags and accessories, bath and body products, and even book and paper collections.

Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Market also offers plenty of food and drink. Do you have a sweet tooth? Pick up a freshly baked red velvet or lemon lavender cupcake from the Silos Baking Company. Feeling a little sluggish? Get a caffeine pick-up from the Magnolia Press Coffee Company. 

And if you’re hungry, grab a bite from the local food trucks. You’ll find an offering pizzas for all dietary needs, Texas BBQ, and unique sandwiches.

Cameron Park

Less than 5 minutes away from the Magnolia Market, Cameron Park is one the largest municipal parks in Texas. The park offers 400 acres of outdoor recreation for fishing enthusiasts, disc golfers, picnickers, and hikers. You’ll find it in downtown Waco along the Brazos River.

Hikers have plenty of options along 20 miles of trails at Cameron Park. Some paths cut through bluffs overlooking the river (like the River trail), and others gently meandering through the park. All are marked as beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert, so choose your path according to your hiking ability. 

If you’re looking for a unique challenge, explore Jacob’s Ladder and Rock Shelter with its 100-step shady climb. Prefer something a little more relaxing? Visit Miss Nellie’s Pretty Place, a fountain plaza with strolling areas and views of bluebonnets in the spring and black-eyed Susans in the summer. 

Historic Suspension Bridge and Riverwalk

The Historic Suspension Bridge, completed in 1870, and the Riverwalk are iconic Waco landmarks. You’ll find them on the Brazos River about four minutes from the Magnolia Silos.

The Waco Riverwalk includes seven miles of multi-use paved trails such as Downtown Trail, Parks Trail, and Baylor Trail.) Much of these are along the banks of the Brazos River. It runs from Baylor University to Cameron Park.

At the Riverwalk, stop at Indian Springs Park to see the “Branding the Brazos” Sculptures. Want to spend time on the water? Rent a paddleboard to go down the Brazos River, or take a relaxing guided river cruise tour. 

Know Before You Go: The bridge is currently closed while undergoing renovations but reopens sometime in 2022. Check the rehabilitation website before making plans.

Camp Caravan Waco

Opened in January 2021, Camp Caravan Waco has 44 level full hookup campsites on gravel and separated by native trees. The campground has laundry facilities, a dog park and is privately owned by former full-time RVers, Tin Can Plan.

Located on Waco Lake, Midway Park Campground has 37 campsites, 32 with water and electricity and 11 with full hookups. All sites are paved, have picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills.
