The Best 3/4 Ton Trucks for Towing in 2022

Are you looking for a new truck or an upgrade? A ¾ ton truck is an excellent option for towing travel trailers and fifth wheels.

From power to safety, a tow truck you can rely on is a major stress relief.

So let’s take a look at the best ¾ ton trucks for towing from four major manufacturers.

What Is a 3/4 Ton Truck?

The Federal Highway Administration assigns classes to trucks. The government defines a ¾ ton truck as a class 2b pickup, which means it has a GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) between 8,501 and 10,000 lbs. It has a larger GVWR than a half-ton truck (or class 2a) and is lighter than a one-ton truck (or class 3).

A ¾ truck usually has the same chassis, drivetrain, and cab as its manufacturer’s one-ton truck. The difference is that the ¾ ton will have lighter-duty suspension for a smoother ride. And a ¾ ton doesn’t have an option for a dual rear wheel.

Trucks that are ¾ ton include models such as the Chevrolet Silverado 2500, GMC Sierra 2500, Ford F-250, Dodge Ram 2500, and Nissan Titan XD.

Other vehicles also fall into the class 2b designation. Vans like the Ford E-250 and Nissan NV2500 have similar capabilities to a ¾ ton truck.

Which 3/4 Ton Truck Can Tow the Most?

The Ford F-250 has the highest tow rating among ¾ ton trucks. Its regular-cab Ford F-250 Super Duty can tow up to 22,800 lbs with a fifth wheel gooseneck hitch and a 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine.

The maximum payload you can get with the F-250 is 4,260 lbs on the diesel engine and regular cab model with a long box. That means it can tow nearly any travel trailer and most fifth wheels.

Can You Pull a Fifth Wheel With a 3/4 Ton Truck?

You can pull most fifth wheels with a ¾ ton truck. In fact, you can tow some of the heaviest fifth wheels with the right engine and set up. Toy hauler fifth wheels are some of the heaviest models on the market.

For example, Grand Design’s Momentum 398M is their biggest fifth-wheel toy hauler, and it has a GVWR of 20,000 lbs. So the Ford Super Duty F-250 would be able to pull it. However, many fifth wheels have a GVWR of much less than 20,000 lbs.

Just remember to do the math and research to ensure that your truck can tow your fifth wheel. Models vary in terms of their capabilities and allowances. Be extra cautious when it comes to matching a truck’s capability with the trailer or fifth wheel it’s towing. Safety first!
