Is the FSX Travel Trailer Worth It?

Let’s look at the small Wildwood FSX trailer, recently awarded RV Pro’s 2022 Best New Model, manufactured by Forest River. However, even though it’s one of the smaller travel trailer options, it still has everything you need for a weekend adventure. Let’s take a closer look at this model, and you can decide if it’s the right fit for you. Let’s dive in.

What Is the FSX Trailer?

The Wildwood FSX travel trailer line comes in as one of the most lightweight options in the RV industry. This means you can tow it easily. Owners can hitch and unhitch simply and travel comfortably.

New owners don’t have to spend more money on a heavy-duty truck. A standard truck or even some SUVs can tow the FSX trailer. It has seven travel trailer floorplans and six toy hauler floorplans.

Who Makes FSX Travel Trailers?

Forest River manufactures FSX travel trailers. Forest River, one of the largest companies in the RV industry, owns numerous brands. Their travel trailers include the FSX units and models by Aurora, Alpha Wolf, Ozark, Shockwave, R-pod, and more.

Fifth wheel brands include Riverstone, Impression, Cardinal, and others. Forest River also owns drivable RV brands, including Berkshire, Georgetown, Sunseeker, and more.

Since 1996, Forest River has produced Class A and C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers, camping trailers, and destination trailers.

About the FSX Trailer

The FSX travel trailers range from 21’ to 23’ in length. Their UVW, the unloaded, empty weight, ranges from 3,000 to 3,800 lbs. This means their CCC (cargo carrying capacity) also varies.

The 179DBK model has the largest CCC at over 1,600 lbs. So if you want to tote around a lot of stuff, this model might work best. Let’s take a closer look at some of the features in the different FSX trailer models.

Specs

All travel trailer units have a 43-gallon freshwater tank, 30-gallon gray tank, and 30-gallon black tank. The UVW ranges from 3,084 lbs to 3,819 lbs.

The exterior height ranges between 10’ 2” to 10’ 4” with awnings between 12’ and 14’ long. They run off a 30 amp service with a 13.5K  BTU air conditioning unit and 20K BTU furnace.

Floorplans

This model has seven travel trailer floorplans and six toy hauler floorplans. The smallest unit, the 167RBK, is 21’ 2” in length with a hitch weight of 350 lbs and UVW of 3,084 lbs.

This model features a rear bathroom, a center kitchen with a booth dinette, an 11 cu ft refrigerator, and a front sofa with a Murphy bed. The 178 BHSK also has a Murphy bed but includes rear bunk beds for additional sleeping space.

The new 169RSK and 176QBHK units feature a rear driver side slide-out in the master bedroom. The 169RSK has a dresser and wardrobe storage across from the bed. However, the 176QBHK has bunk beds across from the bed.

The FSX also has six toy hauler floorplans and a MAX toy hauler — the 270RTK. The front bedroom has a queen bed and side wardrobe storage. The garage features two opposing sleeper sofas and a 90”x81” ramp door that you can use as an outdoor patio. It has a large central living space and kitchen area and a cozy fireplace.

The toy hauler models have separate sleeping spaces with a queen bed except for the 280RT, which has a Murphy bed over the sofa for extra living space. They also all feature the outdoor patio space except the 181RT. It only has the ramp door and doesn’t convert to a patio.

Standout Features

The FSX trailers feature large panoramic windows and large 32”x16” baggage doors for easy access to outdoor storage. Additionally, you can hook up to the cable TV outlet to watch the game outside.

Inside, the residential high-rise kitchen faucet makes cleaning dishes and cooking easy and convenient. Additionally, you may appreciate the large 36”x24” shower pan in the bathroom.

The Best-in-Class Package features an enclosed underbelly for added protection during winter camping. Upgrades also include a black tank flush, Solera slide topper prep, and Furrion solar prep.

The Platinum Package features fiberglass exterior walls with chrome wheel caps and lug nuts.

The Extended Power Package includes a roof-mounted 190W solar panel, 30 amp controller, and battery. Additional upgrades to the FSX trailers include a power tongue jack and MORryde stable step.

What Are the Benefits of the FSX Trailer?

One of the biggest benefits of the FSX trailer is its weight. With some models remaining under 4,000 lbs when fully loaded, owners have the option of towing with a smaller truck or SUV.

You can get into a campsite easier with a smaller trailer. Backing up a 22’ trailer is a breeze compared to backing up a 42’ fifth-wheel.

It also gives more options for camping. Since many national, state, and local parks have size limitations, owners of an FSX trailer will have a better chance of reserving a prime camping location.

What Are the Disadvantages of the FSX Trailer?

The small, lightweight design makes it ideal for towing with a small vehicle. However, some may consider this a disadvantage as well. Taking long, cross-country trips in an FSX trailer may be uncomfortable.

Some might have difficulty toting everything they need for a long trip. In some models, you may also get tired of putting the Murphy bed up and down every day.

Longer trips will also create privacy problems if traveling with more than two people. Since several models feature the Murphy bed, you won’t have a separate sleeping space.

And since the units are smaller overall than other travel trailers, kids and teens could get frustrated with the tiny space. The FSX trailers work great for short weekend getaways but could cause problems for longer trips.

Is the FSX Trailer Worth It?

If you want a starter travel trailer to get your family into the woods making memories together, the FSX might work well. It may also serve as a perfect fit for solo travelers looking to visit as many national parks as possible in a year.

You can tow them with smaller trucks and SUVs, bring your toys along, and enjoy many other amenities. These tiny packages feature everything you need for those picture-perfect moments.
