7 RV Black Tank Lies That Fool Too Many People

The task of dumping your RV black tank is surrounded by plenty of myths and misconceptions that can make the entire process sound rather intimidating to both newbies and seasoned RVers. The good news is that you won’t die (or at least shouldn’t) from dumping your black tank or flushing out black take build-up.

This is important because, as humans, we tend to become more cautious when we allow fear to enter. Why is this important? Misinformation causes people to make messy mistakes, get really, unnecessarily upset, or damage their black water system.

We feel it is our duty to pay it back, so to speak, by un-villainizing a simple function in an RV. Let’s debunk seven common lies when it comes to dumping your RV black water tank.

A man is emptying the RV sewer after camping. He is wearing gloves.

Lie #1: You can dump anywhere if you’re desperate enough.

People claim that when they are in a desperate situation, they believe it’s okay to dump your black tank. In fact, The Dave Matthews Band got caught doing exactly that a few years ago while crossing a bridge.

Always use dump stations and follow the rules to avoid fees and environmental damage.

Lie #2: All sewer hoses are created equal.

This is simply not the case, however, and the quality of your sewer hose and connectors is extremely important to a mess-free and efficient dumping process. This is another aspect of our life when we’re so grateful for the advice given by other, more experienced RVers.

A heavy-duty, completely leak-proof sewer hose system like Rhino brand (which we use) will save you immeasurable mess and frustration.

Lie Number 3: It is okay to Leave the Valves Open at Full Hookup Sites

A few RVers believe it is all right to leave their black tank valve open when hooked up at a full-service campsite.

Leaving your black tank open when hooked up at a full-service site causes the solid waste to build up in the tank as liquids flow out, causing a difficult clog referred to as a “poop pyramid”.

4. Chemicals Aren’t Necessary – Period.

No need for a comment. There are some RVer’s that believe no chemicals are necessary in the Black Tank at all. While you may get away without them for short periods, specially formulated chemicals help break down waste & toilet paper, control odor, and keep the sensors clean.

Skipping them often results in sensor malfunctions.

5. Use a Little Water as Possible

Another very common myth is that you should use as little water as possible to avoid filling the black water holding tank too quickly.

In actuality, the more water you use, the better when it comes to dumping the black water holding tank. Water not only helps to break down waste and prevent clogs, it also acts as a medium to transport the waste from the RV toilet to the black water tank.

Always make sure to flush the RV toilet with lots of water to allow for a smoother disposal process.

Falsehood #6: It’s Ok, Just Rinse for a Minute

Simply rinsing your tank with a hose for a couple of minutes is not a proper cleaning. You should clean and flush your black tank, either using the built-in cleaning system if you have one installed or some type of external tank rinsing tool.

You’ll be amazed at how much residue comes out.

#7 “Any” Toilet Paper is OK

But it’s a “septic” system, you say? Yes, it is –, but it’s a septic system that rocks, sloshes around, gets hauled down the road, dumped, and sprayed with water while you’re driving. While that may not seem like a huge factor, RV-specific or septic-safe toilet paper dissolves faster and doesn’t leave as much residue in your black tank.

Fewer clogs, easier dumps, and a cleaner process all point towards using an approved toilet paper.

Try a few and see what works best for your system, but lean towards products designed for RV use.

Don’t Be Fooled by the RV Lies

By dispelling these seven lies, RVers can confidently approach their black tank and dump properly. Remember, managing waste is an essential part of the RVing experience.

Make sure you have the right tools, knowledge and habits to keep you rolling and the black tank flowing.
