#1 Cherokee Falls

Located in Cloudland Canyon State Park, only 45 minutes from Chattanooga, TN, Cherokee Falls are 60 feet tall. Fun fact, they were named in a contest.

The waterfall trail starts on a paved path that goes down a 600 step staircase to the Cherokee Falls Trail. A very short 0.3-mile trek takes you to the falls. This is a two for one, as if you continue on, you can also see Hemlock Falls which is 90 feet tall.

The trail is quite strenuous on the way back up the staircase.

Offering numerous ways to camp, this campground truly has something for every style of outdoor enthusiast. There are 72 RV sites (various sizes and hook up types), tent sites, yurts, backcountry hike in sites, cottages, and even a huge group lodge.

It’s a great basecamp to explore the state park with ample opportunity to hike, fish, campfire, explore, and create memories.

#2 Toccoa Falls

Often said to be the tallest single drop falls east of the Mississippi, Toccoa Falls is 186 feet, and 26 feet taller than Niagara Falls! Only a few miles outside of the town of Toccoa Falls, it is a short walk to view the falls from the campus of Toccoa Falls College.

Located on the campus, this campground is convenient to college activities and the falls.

#3 Helton Creek Falls 

A double waterfall hike, Helton Creek Falls is a short, kid friendly, less than one mile hike near Helen, GA. Total vertical drop of both falls is around 100 feet, and the lush valley makes a great picnic spot.

One of Georgia’s oldest state parks, Vogel is located at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest. Campsites, cottages, and primitive backpacking sites offer an array of accommodations. The 22-acre lake is a great place for non-motorized fun or a cool swim.

#4 DeSoto Falls

Located in Lumpkin County along Frogtown Creek, there are actually three falls here, Upper, Middle and Lower Desoto Falls.

Upper is 200 feet, Middle is 90 feet, and Lower is 35 feet drop. Near Helen, GA, the falls were named because, according to legend, a piece of armor from DeSoto’s 1500s expedition was found nearby. The two-mile out and back trail is easy to moderate, and the shaded creek location makes it a popular hike.

Great Nearby Campsite: Desoto Falls Recreation Area

The 650-acre recreation area offers easy access to the Desoto Falls, there are RV sites and tent camping. This is a small campground with 24 sites, no water or electric but water is available in the camp, and there is a warm water shower facility in the lower loop, and flush facilities in both loops.

#5 Becky Branch Falls

Becky Branch Falls is a 20 foot cascading falls just 5 minutes from downtown Clayton, GA. It is easily accessible via a .25 mile hike from the parking area. While short, this hike is more of a climb, with straight-up versions and a switchback version. Those with fear of heights are warned to check ahead.

Location: From Clayton, drive east on Warwoman Road for 2.8 miles.

Great Nearby CampsiteToccoa Valley Campground, 11481 Aska Road, Blue Ridge, GA 30513

Close to historic downtown Blue Ridge, and on the banks of the Toccoa River, this campground has been a popular weekend oasis for over 50 years.

You can tube, kayak, or sit in the water, and the campground offers rentals and shuttles for those activities. From full hookup RV sites to tent sites, there are options for all, although RVs over 24 feet incur additional fees and are not recommended.

This campground doesn’t allow alcohol and has extra fees for pets and additional people over 3 per site. No generators are allowed.

#6 Amicalola Falls

Located inside of the 829 acre Amicalola State Park, between Ellijay and Dahlonega in Dawsonville, GA, the park’s name is from a Cherokee word meaning “tumbling waters.”

The falls itself is a 729-foot marvel that is the highest in Georgia, and considered a natural wonder. There is an 8-mile trail that winds past the falls and leads to Springer Mountain which is the southern tip of the Appalachian Trail.

The Amicalola Lodge is a historic accommodation choice, but there are also RV camping and tent camping options in the park, with 24 wooded campsites on top of the mountain.

Sites have water, power, grill, and fire ring, and there are laundry facilities and restrooms with showers, and paved pathways. The campground has a 25% grade, so large RVs and underpowered tow vehicles are not advised.

#7 Anna Ruby Falls

Twin waterfalls where Curtis Creek and York Creek join, the Anna Ruby Falls were named after the daughter of an early settler. The Anna Ruby Scenic Area is a 1,600 acre area within the Chattahoochee National Forest, accessed via the Unicoi State Park.

Accessed via a half-mile paved trail, the Curtis Creek drop is 153 feet, and the York Creek drops 50 feet.

38 wooded full hookup sites, each with 30/50, water, sewer, cable, WiFi, and more, and tent sites have electric and water. The campground has a recreation hall, basketball court, tetherball, table tennis, games, horseshoes, a playground, and incredible mountain views.
