The 5 Best Box Wines for Camping

The 5 Best Box Wines for Camping

Wine is a girl’s best friend, or anyone’s friend, for that matter – whether it comes in a bottle or box.

Wine stays by your side when happy or sad.  It accompanies you to the best meals and makes the worst meals better. Wine warms you up on a chilly night by a campfire, yet it keeps you cool on a hot summer day.

Is there anything better than a bottle of wine when camping? Yes! Box wine! And we’ve got the best for RV camping.

Let’s dive in!

Why RVing and Box Wines are Perfect Companions

The less glass in a moving RV, the better. Certainly, nobody wants a bottle of wine to find its way onto the floor. You’ve worked hard to keep that wood-grain flooring shiny and looking beautiful. You surely have no desire to dye it red.

Or that white rug that you love so much? You like it white. That’s why you bought a white rug.

Not to mention that bottle of wine you just opened. You only wanted one glass. So, how do you cork it back up securely enough to prevent spills in your RV cupboard or refrigerator?

The best solution to this dilemma is to purchase box wines instead of bottled ones. In fact, with a box, you can pour one glass or three, and it will stay sealed and fresh no matter where it’s stored. As a result, RVing and box wines are perfect companions.

What Makes a Good Box Wine

There’s a stereotype that box wine is not as good as wine in a bottle. And that may have been true back in the day. But, today, it’s not. Box wine can be just as good, if not better, than the fancy, expensive bottled ones. Packaging has become more efficient, and with increased quality products, box wine stays fresher longer and maintains its flavor better than in a bottle.

Many box wines come in three-liter packages, which is equal to four bottles. Combine that with a longer stay-fresh duration of around 30 days, and the price per bottle is less without the actual bottle. For a deal like this, box me in.

The 5 Best Box Wines for RV Camping

With over 8,000 wineries in the U.S. alone, choosing a box wine that fits your fancy can be difficult.  It’s even more complicated if you like whites and reds. Then throw in the rosé or dessert wines, and choices become almost limitless and nearly overwhelming.

Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered with these five best box wines to take with you on your next RV camping trip.

#1 – Bota Box Nighthawk Rich Red Wine Blend

Why You’ll Love It: This well-known California red wine blend has a bold, beautiful color. Additionally, the fruity aromas of blackberries, raspberries, and rich chocolate combine well with the hints of caramel and vanilla.

At the finish, the Nighthawk gives off a smooth, smoky flavor perfect for sitting around a campfire on a cool summer evening. And at 13.5% in a three-liter package, it’s the ideal box wine to share with friends.

Price: $19.99

#2 – Franzia Sunset Blush Pink Wine

Why You’ll Love It: Franzia is another well-known California wine. And, like the Nighthawk, it doesn’t disappoint. Its pink hue gives its sunset blush name, and it’s quite refreshing.

We suggest you chill this box wine and serve it with lighter fare that goes with its hint of strawberry. At 9% and available in three and five-liter boxes, the Sunset Blush is semi-sweet, light, and a perfect fit for a patio lunch on a summer’s day.

Price: 3.0L at $11.49, and 5.0L at $15.99

#3 – Vin Vault Chardonnay

Why You’ll Love It: Available in a single serving or three-liter size, the Vin Vault Chardonnay from California has all the aromas of fall. To start with, it has pear and baked apple flavors.

Then it finishes with notes of spices and caramel. These notes result from the fermentation process giving it the perfectly balanced oak and caramel flavors at the end. When it’s time for a BBQ with grilled chicken or pork, this 13.5% box chardonnay pairs well with either.

Price: $15.49

#4 – Barefoot Sunset Red Blend

Why You’ll Love It: Curling up on a couch with friends on a chilly night? Then Barefoot Sunset Red Blend from California will keep you and your friends cozy all night long.

Clocking in at 13%, this box wine gives off hints of black cherry, blueberry, and vanilla flavors. It finishes smooth and pairs quite nicely with chocolate, so it’s the optimal house guest for a night in.

Price: $19.99

#5 – La Vieille Ferme Rosé

Why You’ll Love It: Finally, bring the flavors of France home to you with La Vieille Ferme Rosé. At 13.5% and available in a three-liter box, its soft rose color is quite appealing and has flavors easy to drink.

Fruity with notes of strawberries, raspberries, and nectarines, it finishes crisp and clean. This box rosé is one of the best from the southern Rhône valley, certainly pairing well with summertime patios under a brilliant blue sky. More like a white than a rosé, it’s a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah, making it light-bodied, dry, and well-balanced.

Price: $20.00

Sorry guys, I trust your judgement on many things but Bota Chardonnay was the winner until Walmart came out with Oak Leaf Chardonnay. $10ish and as good as Bota for about half the price. I’m a sailor so I may be cheap, but I’m also a sailor so I know my drinks. Keep up the great work!

  2. LauraC says:

Unfortunately you’ve overlooked the best boxed red by overlooking Costco’s boxed Cab.
