About Kanye West

He finished high school but dropped out of college to make music. His debut album College Dropout, released in 2004, reflects that choice.

West’s career grew as he produced albums for many prominent artists. In fact, he toured with U2. 

West was outspoken about his frustration with President Bush’s response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. As a result, the rapper started a fund-raising campaign. He was also celebrated for helping move rap music away from its gangsta image.

In 2012, he married reality star Kim Kardashian, and the couple has four children. During this time, West’s behavior became increasingly odd and controversial. He briefly ran for president in 2020 and has been treated for mental illness and opiate addiction. West and Kardashian are currently divorced.

In 2020, West bought his Chicago childhood home for $225,000. 

His late mother previously owned the property but sold it in 2004. Kanye’s collaborator, Rhymefest, recently bought the house and planned to turn it into an “arts incubator.”

The combined trail is a 1.7-mile loop around a lagoon in Jackson Park that’s fit for all skill levels. It attracts many return visitors, which says a lot about the trail maintenance.

Though this trail is in the center of things, you’ll feel far away from the city. Dogs are also welcome as long as they’re on leashes. 

Washington Lagoon Loop

This moderate trail is a stunning 1.2-mile loop near Chicago. The path takes you around a lake and through a bird and butterfly sanctuary. You may spot some of those, as well as diverse flora that grows near the trail.

While you’re there, stop off at the DuSable Museum of African American History.

Best Camping Near Kanye West’s Childhood Home

Woodland Village Mobile Home & RV Park

Woodland Village is the best campground within 45 minutes of Kanye West’s childhood home. It has 40 back-in sites, all with full hookups. The park offers TV but no WiFi, and satellite reception is good. Reviewers especially praise the friendly staff and how well-maintained it is.

They have laundry on-site, but there are no public showers. Pets are welcome, though. One caveat to note is that there are train tracks nearby, so light sleepers should bring earplugs. 

This park is open year-round, and the current rate is $40/night.

Blackwell Family Campground

This campground has easy access to Chicago, but it’s only open on weekends. 

There are over 60 sites here for RVs, trailers, and tents. All sites have electricity, but none have water or sewage. The campground does have free showers and dump stations.

Because this campground is within a forest preserve, they have a lot of policies concerning what is and isn’t permitted. For instance, no alcohol is permitted, and guests aren’t allowed after the preserve closes at night. Be sure you review all their rules ahead of time.

Rates are $30/night.

Nope. It’s not open to the public and might never be. You can drive by, but that’s it for now. That works out well because there are so many other, better things to do in Chicago.
