What is Camp LeJeune?
Camp LeJeune has been a training facility for the United States military in Jacksonville, North Carolina. While it originally started as an 11,000-acre base in 1941, it’s now over 156,000 acres. It has more than 14 miles of beaches and state-of-the-art facilities to prepare military personnel for various scenarios.
When it comes to offering facilities to prepare military forces for battle, Camp LeJeune is about as good as it gets. The base frequently hosts military forces from around the world as they complete bilateral and NATO-sponsored exercises to hone their skills. With all Camp LeJeune provides the military, it’s no wonder it’s the largest concentration of marines and sailors worldwide.
Those living on base have access to various recreation and fitness opportunities. There’s no reason for anyone to be bored! The camp features bowling, a golf course, inline skating, pools, fishing, recreational shooting, a skate park, and several sports and gym facilities.
Who Can Stay at Camp LeJeune?
Camp LeJeune is an active military base, and access is restricted to personnel and their families. Visitors are welcome inside, but it must be for sponsored or official business. You cannot simply drive or walk up to the gate and expect to enter the facilities.
Security at Camp LeJeune and other military bases is taken very seriously for the safety of those serving in the military. It can be a somewhat intimidating process if you’ve never done it before. However, it’s a piece of cake once you know the system. Are There Parks for RVers Near Camp LeJeune?
Luckily, many options are available if you plan to spend time at Camp LeJeune. You can park your RV at Camp LeJeune and live comfortably. But there are also other camping options available as well.
Onslow Beach
Onslow Beach is an RV park on Camp LeJeune property. It’s intended for use by active duty servicepeople, their dependents, DOD civilians, reservists, retired active duty, inactive reservists, VHIC eligible veterans, and approved caregivers. Reservations are available on a tiered system, which prioritizes active military members.
They offer 30 and 50-amp sites with water and sewage available at each site. In addition, each spot also has cable TV. You’ll find a picnic table and gazebo at each campsite and a community bathhouse that’s easily accessible.
The Army Corp. fishing dock is a short walk and makes for some excellent fishing. Costs are $37 per night. They also offer a monthly rate from November through May. For those interested, there’s also dry camping available year-round.
Brewster Recreation and Campground Area
Brewster Recreation and Campground Area offers a handful of primitive spaces. These sites are as bare bones as you can get. However, most sites provide a picnic shelter, table, and a fire ring. However, that’s about all there is. You’ll need to put your survival skills to the test and come with a tent and everything you need to survive during your stay.
Visitors can find potable water and port-a-john toilets available in the campground. These are great options for anyone who wants to spend a weekend floating around the water in a canoe or kayak. These sites are $15 per night, and guests must leave no trace.

What Is There to Do Near Camp LeJeune?
The area surrounding Camp LeJeune offers something for just about everyone. Whether you’re looking to grab a bite to eat, visit a museum, or get in a good sweat, you can find it nearby. There’s so much to see and do that you’ll have no trouble filling your schedule with fun and exciting activities for all ages.
The area has lots of museums and outdoor recreation opportunities you can enjoy while you make memories with your loved ones. Don’t miss the farmers market, distilleries, or golf courses. These are all great ways to spend a day or weekend relaxing and getting outdoors.
Museums
The area is home to some incredible museums that can allow you and your fellow travelers to learn about the area’s importance in history. The Montford Point Marine Museum highlights President Franklin Roosevelt’s signing of legislation that allowed African Americans to join the Marine Corps. The museum highlights the importance of this legislation and the impact it had on the growth and strength of the military.
You won’t want to miss Lynnwood Park Zoo, a ten-acre piece of land with more than 50 species ranging from alligators to zebras. If you’re looking for a less wild experience, the LeJeune Memorial Gardens are a peaceful way to explore the area.
Don’t miss your chance to explore the USS North Carolina, an actual battleship. It’s docked near Camp LeJeune in downtown Wilmington. Once aboard the battleship, you can imagine what life would have been like for the combat members onboard during World War II. You can read the stories and see photographs of those who bravely went to war.
Outdoor Recreation
If you want to spend your time outdoors, there are plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. Don’t forget that the area has plenty of access to water. So bring your kayak and other watercraft to take full advantage. But that’s not the only way to take in nature while visiting.
Hammocks Beach State Park is a fun place to bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a meal. Hop on a ferry and explore Bear Island. While on the island, you can hunt for shells, fish, swim, or camp. It’s a fantastic opportunity to make some memories you’ll never forget.
If you’re looking for another great fishing spot, Bicentennial Park is another fantastic spot to consider. Here you’ll find a fishing dock, restrooms, and plenty of benches to have a seat. Here it’s easy to enjoy the sights and sounds of being on the water. If you play your cards right, you might even catch your dinner!
Is Camp LeJeune Worth It for RVers?
