Is a Grease Monkey Oil Change Worth Your Money?

Grease Monkey is one of many national chains that offer services for your vehicle. However, nobody wants to spend more money than they have to.

With your cash and engine on the line, you should know how much they charge to avoid spending too much.

We looked to see if Grease Monkey is worth what they charge for an oil change.

Let’s check under the hood!

What is Grease Monkey Auto?

Grease Monkey International, LLC is an oil change center serving over two million customers yearly. They have more than 700 locations in the United States, Mexico, China, Colombia, and Saudi Arabia.

The company launched in 1978 in Denver, Colorado, specializing in preventative care. They aim to help customers make informed and educated decisions.

For seven consecutive years, they made the Entrepreneur’s Franchise 500 ranking. In addition, they’ve received a 5-star rating from VetFran. They provide veterans and their spouses with opportunities to start their own businesses.

In 2013, they announced the acquisition of 30 stores from LubePro’s International. The deal expanded their operations outside Colorado and into Illinois, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. They claim to be the “largest independent franchise of automotive oil change centers” in the United States.

Who Owns Grease Monkey Auto?

Grease Monkey is one of the flagship brands operating under FullSpeed Automotive. The company also owns SpeeDee, American Lubefast, Uncle Ed’s Oil Shoppe, and Kwik Kar. They maintain over 900 locations in markets worldwide.

In 2017, the private equity firm CenterOak Partners LLC purchased FullSpeed Automotive. Their leadership team remained in place but did not release transaction details. In recent years, they’ve made more than 150 acquisitions worth more than eight billion dollars. Currently, their portfolio is valued at over two billion dollars.

Is Grease Monkey Auto a Franchise?

Many of the owners of Grease Monkey locations are entrepreneurs serving as franchisees. By entering into a partnership, shop owners can transform their garages into part of a larger business.

These individuals aren’t just owners but supporters of their local communities. Some partner with community organizations and donate to events and fundraisers. Sponsorships vary based on the need and the store’s current ability. However, it’s an excellent way for them to give back and connect with the public.

Unlike other corporations, franchising doesn’t require tremendous experience or a background in automotive. The most significant requirements are a passion for customer service and a willingness to follow their plan.

Unfortunately, like many of these opportunities, you must meet a minimum financial buy-in. These include having at least $300,000 cash and a net worth of $500,000.

What Services Do They Offer?

In the past, oil changes were the bread and butter for Grease Monkey. It helped them to get their business off the ground. However, as their number of garages grows, they’ve also expanded their list of services.

Today, they can address issues ranging from air conditioning to windshield repairs. Many customers also rely on them for tire rotations, wheel balancing, and battery replacements. In addition, they can diagnose the cause of a check engine light suddenly coming on.

All of these options make it a shop you should consider when your car requires routine maintenance or major repairs. They can address multiple issues in one visit and care for you and your automobile.

Are Oil Changes at Grease Monkey Auto More Expensive?

As a nationwide establishment, it’s vital to recognize that prices vary significantly based on location. Grease Monkey’s pricing is slightly cheaper than other options like Walmart Auto. If you want to save a few bucks, call a local shop and ask about pricing and availability.

The cost can range from $29.99 to $79.99. These base fees typically include up to five quarts. Once you exceed this limit, they usually charge $4 to $8 for each additional quart. Compared to Walmart Auto ($34.88), Jiffy Lube ($44.99), and Take 5 ($49.99), it’s relatively inexpensive.

Because Grease Monkey offers various services, they may be able to identify other potential issues. You may come in for an oil change and discover filters need replacing or that your tires are nearing the end of their life. By staying current on these items, you can avoid piling other expenses onto the price of your service.

How Long Does an Oil Change Take?

A typical oil change at Grease Monkey typically takes 15 to 30 minutes. While the lube change is happening, their staff completes a free inspection. This quick check helps ensure your car is operating as it should. Their once-over includes checking tire pressure, tread depth, and topping off fluids.

Unfortunately, while they estimate the service to take 15 to 30 minutes, things don’t always go as planned. Your wait may vary, especially during peak times. They may even discover other issues that you need to address. Not only could this take longer, but it could also cost more.

To avoid this, schedule an appointment or drop off your car and pick it up when they finish.
