How Long Has Winnebago Been Around?
When imagining the founder of a famous RV manufacturer, you likely don’t picture a funeral home manager with a degree in mortuary science. However, that perfectly describes the company’s founder, John K. Hanson.
He sweet-talked a California-based manufacturer to move their operation to Iowa to get his brand off the ground. Modernistic Industries opened up for business in 1958. Sales took off, and Hanson purchased the entire operation in the following year.
The new company adopted the name Winnebago Industries in 1960 and embraced manufacturing motorhomes. Their first coach rolled out of the factory in 1966. These 17 to 27-foot motorhomes made quite a splash in the industry.
