About Galveston, Texas
An hour south of Houston, Texas, is the charming island city of Galveston. It has a subtropical climate, which makes it a popular year-round tourist destination.
Galveston is an affordable spot to explore, with tons of sun and sandy beaches. However, its rich history and culture show it’s more than just a pretty place to visit.
Europeans began establishing settlements in 1816, and the Congress of Mexico created the port in 1825. The Republic of Texas became an independent nation in 1836. Leaders chose Galveston to serve as its capital.
On December 29, 1845, the republic voted to join the United States. This decision caused pressure between the US and Mexico and led to the Mexican-American War in 1846.
Then, on September 8, 1900, a category four hurricane hit the area. The 15-foot storm surge ripped through the city and killed approximately 8,000 people. It remains the deadliest natural disaster in American history. As a result, the community developed a reputation for being resilient.
Today, the island has a very relaxed vibe. Hotels, restaurants, and beaches line Seawall Boulevard. Whether you want to relax or savor the nightlife, you’ll have several options.

#1 Take a Ride on the Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry
The Galveston-Port Bolivar Ferry connects the city with the Bolivar Peninsula on Highway 87. This 2.7-mile journey across the bay lasts about 18 minutes. This water taxi will save you more than 125 miles and two and a half hours of travel time.
One of the best things about this experience is that it’s 100% free and is available 24 hours a day. The Texas Department of Transportation has been offering the service since 1934.
The upper observation area provides some fantastic views of the area, especially Fort Travis and the Bolivar Lighthouse. Bring your camera to capture pictures and videos to remember the adventure.
#2 Explore the East End Lagoon Nature Preserve
East End Lagoon Nature Preserve is our next affordable place to consider while in Galveston. As its name indicates, it sits on the far east side of the island. It’s a 685-acre preserve popular with those who enjoy birding, fishing, and paddling. Even better, there’s no charge to visit.
The Army Corp of Engineers gifted the property to the city under the condition that it remain natural. Per the promise, officials have been working since 2009 to convert the land into a nature park and preserve. While walking along the trails, you’ll see the many wildlife that call it home.

#3 Stroll the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier
One of the star attractions of the coast is the Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier. It may not be free, but it has an affordable Walk-On Pass. This ticket gets you through the gates, where you can walk around the 1,100-foot structure and soak in the vibe.
Grab a bite to eat and watch as all ages hop on and off carnival rides and play games. If you want to join the fun, upgrade to an All-Day Ride Pass. It allows you to enjoy all the attractions, including a 100-foot-tall coaster.
#4 Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum
The Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum is a self-guided facility with interactive displays. Typically, most guests spend an hour and a half exploring.
During the tour, you’ll be able to walk through the three floors of the rig, watch film presentations, and interact with displays. This experience can be a great way to learn about the history of drilling, careers in the field, and the steps taken to protect the environment.
Tickets are usually less than $10 per person, but they offer discounts for seniors and military personnel. They also have a group package that caps the cost to make it easier for larger families to visit.
#5 Enjoy the Betty Head Oleander Garden Park
Another cheap attraction to consider for your Galveston travel itinerary is the Betty Head Oleander Garden Park. It’s the largest collection of oleanders in the United States. You’ll find nearly 40 species of these stunning flowers in the half-acre area.
It sits across the street from another free attraction, Moody Mansion. This restored residence was home to one of the wealthiest individuals in the 1950s, WL Moody, Jr. It’s open 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM each day and is full of authentic memorabilia. #6 Visit Seawolf Park
Seawolf Park sits on Pelican Island, which was formerly an immigration station. The pier is a popular spot for fishing, and many families use the picnic area and playground. Unless you plan to fish for the entire day, you can expect to spend an hour or two here.
While in the area, you’ll also see other incredible tourist attractions, like the Galveston Naval Museum. It’s home to a WWII submarine, the USS Stewart, and the remains of the largest concrete ship ever constructed.
#7 Walk Along the Seawall
Last but certainly not least, a walk along the seawall is our final suggestion for an affordable Galveston attraction. At 10 miles long and 17 feet tall, it’s the longest continuous sidewalk in the country. It’s also home to the longest mural in the world.
Walking the seawall, you can stop at shops, restaurants, and gear rental stores. In addition, it’s a great spot for runners, cyclists, and skaters. Surrey drivers line the sidewalk and are a great option to take you almost anywhere.
