Firstly, we’ll start our tour of California’s Star Wars destinations in the state’s southeastern corner, near Yuma, Arizona. Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is an otherworldly landscape where creators shot scenes for Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.
This is where Han Solo pleaded with Jabba the Hutt to release his imprisoned friends.
The exact filming location was in Buttercup Valley, a sand flat surrounded by towering dunes. At one point, you could visit Jabba’s luxury sail barge, the Khetanna, but it’s no longer there.
#2 Dantes View
Next, we’ll head north to Death Valley National Park. In Episode IV: A New Hope, you can see Dantes View when the team looks out over the Mos Eisley Spaceport on Tatooine.

#3 Twenty-Mule Team Canyon
Another Star Wars filming location in Death Valley is Twenty-Mule Team Canyon, not far from Dantes View. When faithful droids C-3PO and R2-D2 make their way to Jabba’s palace to rescue Han in Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, the path they traverse is the dirt road that winds through this desolate canyon.
We hear the filmmakers struggled with radio interference while maneuvering R2-D2 via remote control. This may have been due to one of the nearby Air Force bases. However, we think the final result was worth it.
#4 Artists Palette
The brightly colored hills of Death Valley’s Artists Palette served as a filming location for Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. From the scenic overlook, you can look down into the wash below and see where the Jawas captured R2-D2.
Fortunately, this destination is just off the road, so you won’t have to travel too far off the beaten path to find it.
#5 Redwood State and National Parks
Many scenes from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi were filmed in the redwood forests outside of Crescent City, California. Sadly, most of these towering trees have since been destroyed.
