3 Food Festivals You’ll Want to Devour in October

While some people can only think about the spooky season once October arrives, we’re partial to the many food festivals hosted throughout the country during this time of year.

From BBQ throwdowns to the world’s most epic pumpkin festival, you can find it all in the fall.

Today, we’re journeying through three events you won’t want to miss.

Let’s dig in!

What Do October Food Festivals Bring to the Table?

October is the ultimate time to enjoy the sights, smells, and exquisite flavors of food festivals around the country. In many parts of the US, a crisp fall breeze is in the air, and folks are itching to get outside.

Whether you aim to sample all the regional culinary delicacies or sip yourself silly on boutique wines, a few tips may help you make the most of your adventure.

Firstly, we suggest dressing for the occasion. While plenty of people choose to don their finest threads for these events, you’ll have a much better time in comfortable clothing. If you can’t stomach the thought of dressing down, at least consider wearing clothes with a little wiggle room and opting for sneakers instead of heels.

Next, remember that a food festival is a marathon, not a sprint. Take your time savoring the flavors of the evening, and don’t attempt to sample every single item available. Research ahead of time to determine which vendors you want to prioritize. Once you arrive at the event, you and your crew can split up to hit your favorites and reconvene to share a tapas-style meal.

Staying hydrated is our final tip for enjoying October’s many food and wine festivals. Although we wouldn’t blame you for sipping every beverage available, we suggest gulping down water between wine tastings to keep your stamina up and your wits about you.

Now, without further ado, here are three of the best October food festivals around the country!

#1 Wine on the River Memphis

Folks looking to taste food and wine from national and international vendors should consider heading to Memphis, Tennessee, in early October for a fantastic one-day festival.

Wine on the River Memphis features representatives from vineyards and distilleries across the globe. Organizers also invite chefs and restauranteurs whose creations complement these regional selections. Prepare to transport yourself to Napa, Tuscany, and beyond!

The 2024 event marks the first year at the new location. Tom Lee Park overlooks the mighty Mississippi River and offers sprawling cityscape views. However, if you can’t make it to Memphis, Wine on the River hosts festivals in other Southern cities, such as Nashville and Mobile.

Wine on the River Memphis is a 21+ event, so be sure to schedule a babysitter. Additionally, you must purchase tickets beforehand, as they don’t sell them at the door.

Best Camping Nearby

Just across the Mississippi in West Memphis, Arkansas, you can book a comfortable campsite at Tom Sawyer’s RV Park. Many full-hookup spots overlook the water, where you can watch boats pass day and night. Laundry facilities, modern restrooms, and free WiFi ensure a comfortable stay.

Plenty of pull-thru sites can comfortably accommodate big rigs.

#2 Half Moon Bay Art & Pumpkin Festival

For over 50 years, folks have flocked to the Pumpkin Capital of the World to celebrate all things fall. Over two days in mid-October, the small town of Half Moon Bay, California, hosts their annual Art & Pumpkin Festival, featuring food, beer, and plenty of family fun.

You can peruse over 250 artist booths filled with unique creations, ogle at Volkswagen-sized gourds, and participate in pumpkin carving competitions throughout the weekend. Other events include various footraces, cornhole, and impressive garden displays. Three music stages feature local and regional performers, so you can count on lively tunes to set the tone.

We suggest arriving by Columbus Day to see the World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off, then sticking around for the big party the following weekend.

Best of all, this event is completely free.

Half Moon Bay State Beach offers waterfront campsites for RVs big and small. You can snag a dry camping spot or one with electrical hookups. Either way, you’ll have access to restrooms with showers, potable water, and a dump station.

Additionally, you’ll be steps away from the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail, where you can soak in the sights.

#3 World Series of Barbecue

If the thought of a BBQ festival gets your grill burning, you won’t want to miss the aptly named World Series of Barbecue. This three-day event takes place at the Kansas Speedway, where over 600 teams compete for the title of Grand Champion.

This isn’t just any old food festival. In fact, it’s the largest event of its kind on the planet. The gates typically open at 8AM, and the party lasts into the night.

Of course, this meat-centric extravaganza is about more than just ‘cue. There’s a Battle of the Bands competition, as well as games and activities for kids and adults alike. But you won’t be disappointed if you’re only here for the food. You can graze on steak, pork ribs, and chicken until your belly’s begging for mercy.

The American Royal World Series of Barbecue generally offers discounted tickets ahead of the event, so be sure to buy your tickets early. However, it’s held on different weekends each year, so keep an eye on their website for up-to-date information.
