If you’re like us and always chasing those free camping spots with a little extra oomph, let me introduce you to Lewis Park in Wheatland, Wyoming.
We stumbled upon this gem while looking for a quick and easy place to stop for the night—and wow, did we score. Not only is camping totally free, but they’ve got free electric hookups, too. Yeah, you heard that right.
Free camping and free electric.
It’s like the universe decided to throw us a little bonus on this leg of our adventure.
The park itself is tucked away in a cute little town, and it’s just the kind of place you want to park, stretch your legs, and soak up some small-town vibes.
About Lewis Park in Wheatland
Lewis Park in Wheatland is the definition of “sweet and simple.” The camping area is spacious enough for RVs of all sizes, and the free electric hookups are a serious perk. You’ll find 30-amp outlets available at several of the campsites, which is practically unheard of for a free spot.
There’s no need for reservations—just roll up, pick a spot, and plug in. It’s first-come, first-served, so you might want to arrive early to snag one of the spots with electric.
The park itself is well-maintained, with plenty of shade from mature trees and open spaces for stretching out or walking the dog. There’s even a small pond if you’re looking for a little bit of nature in the middle of town.
Sure, it’s not the wilderness, but for a quick, easy stop with all the basics covered? Lewis Park is a solid win.
Our Personal Experience at Lewis Park in Wheatland
Location: Lewis Park in Wheatland, Wyoming
GPS: 42.0478, -104.9533
Date / Temp: We camped here for three nights in early August. The temps were mild, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s. The overcast skies helped keep temps low.
Amenities: This City Park offers potable water, a dump station, trash receptacles, and free electricity! The park has baseball fields, a disc golf course, basketball courts, playgrounds, tennis courts, and a beautiful walking trail.
Wifi / Cell: One of the highlights of this site is its connectivity. We received a strong 4G LTE signal with our AT&T hotspot & phones. According to Campendium reviews, Verizon also receives great signal at the site. Unfortunately, T-Mobile receives no service.
Noise: This site is mildly quiet. It doesn’t get too much traffic, and since its pretty large, the traffic it does get is spread out. The loudest thing around is a nearby train track – we’ve heard trains two or three times a day.
Grocery / Errands: Downtown Wheatland is less than a mile away, it offers standard grocery shopping, bars and restaurants. The park is located centrally to all businesses and city services.
Dog Friendly: This site is dog-friendly. River had a lot of space to play and explore. She loved the lush green grass to roll around on.
Entertainment: We enjoyed this park as a stopover as we trek through Wyoming. Our favorite activity here is enjoying the high-quality walking trails.
Would We Camp at Lewis Park in Wheatland Again?
Would we camp at Lewis Park in Wheatland again? Definitely—if we’re in the area. It’s hard to say no to free camping with electric hookups, especially when the park is as chill and convenient as this one.
That said, it’s not exactly on the list of must-visit RV destinations, so unless our travels take us through Wheatland again, we’re probably not making a memorable trip back anytime soon.
But if you find yourself passing through and need a quick stopover that’s easy on the wallet, Lewis Park is a no-brainer. Free is free, after all!
