We rolled into Grayrocks Reservoir in our trusty, vintage Fiber Stream camper, excited to find a killer spot, and we didn’t just find a spot—we snagged the perfect one, right on the water’s edge.
Talk about waking up to unbeatable views! This hidden gem outside Wheatland, Wyoming, was everything we didn’t know we needed. We’re all about those peaceful, off-the-beaten-path camping spots, and this one had us hooked the moment we parked.
The vibes here? Chill. Just you, the water, and wide-open skies for days. Plus, it’s totally free, which means more gas money for the next leg of the adventure, am I right? Grayrocks has that magical “this is what camping’s all about” feel.
Keep reading, ‘cause I’m about to spill all the deets on our personal experience at Grayrocks.

About the Grayrocks Reservoir Free Campsite
Okay, let’s get real: free camping, especially with a front-row view of a beautiful reservoir, is basically hitting the jackpot. We pulled our vintage Fiber Stream right up to the shoreline, cracked open a cold one, and just vibed with the setting sun.
The camping here is dispersed, which means no numbered spots or annoying neighbors right on top of you—just wide-open space to park your rig and enjoy.
There’s no fancy glamping setup—no hookups, no services—but who needs all that when you’ve got nature putting on a show right outside your door? It’s first-come, first-served, but there’s usually plenty of room to snag a great spot, especially if you want to park by the water like we did.
You’ll want to bring your own water and be ready to pack out your trash, but that’s all part of the adventure. And, seriously, did I mention it’s free? You can’t beat a zero-dollar lakeside view.
Location: Grayrocks Reservoir in Wheatland, Wyoming
GPS: 42.161, -104.693
Date / Temp: We camped here for four nights in mid-August. The temps were pretty mild, with highs in the 80s and lows in the 50s. There were a few afternoons that got a little hotter than we like, but the lake is just a few feet away and makes it easy to cool off! The water temp was perfect for swimming.
Amenities: This park offers vault toilets and possibly trash receptacles (we were here for the eclipse and aren’t sure if they brought the dumpsters in for this specific event). There is free potable water and a free dump station in town located at Lewis Park.
Wifi / Cell: We received AT&T with a booster at our site. Before the crowds arrived, we were able to stream Netflix… once the crowds got here, the network was too bogged down to do anything online.
Noise: This site is tranquil. Even with 300+ rigs here, we were never bothered by the noise. The main reason is that Grayrocks Reservoir is HUGE. There are so many sites to choose from that you can make sure to have plenty of privacy.
Grocery / Errands: Downtown Wheatland is about 15 miles from the site. It has a few restaurants & bars, grocery shopping, and random mom-and-pop shops. We enjoy a slightly larger town if we have to drive 15 miles to get there… but we did manage to complete our errands and get most of the groceries we wanted.
Dog Friendly: This site is dog-friendly. River had a lot of space to play and explore. She loved playing in the nearby water!
Entertainment: We loved relaxing by the water and enjoying the solitude this site offers. The Solar Eclipse was the main entertainment, though!
Would We Come Back to Grayrocks Reservoir?
Would we come back to Grayrocks Reservoir? Well… maybe.
Don’t get us wrong—the experience was amazing. Camping right on the water’s edge, the peaceful vibes, and those epic sunsets really made this spot one to remember.
But the truth is, it’s kind of out of the way from most RV-friendly destinations. If you’re headed toward Wheatland or just looking for a laid-back, off-the-grid experience, it’s perfect. But if you’re hoping to stay closer to bigger RV parks or more touristy areas, Grayrocks might not make the cut next time.
That said, if we ever find ourselves in southeastern Wyoming again, we’d definitely consider setting up camp here for another round of waterfront relaxation.

I’m glad you had a good experience. We went there a couple of weeks ago, but our spot had dead carp on the shore (so we couldn’t let our dog have the run of the place, or she’d eat them) and our neighbors we a little rowdy. I think it is the luck of the spot-picking. Glad you found a nice one!
Wanted to thank you guys so much for sharing, information, sites, and travel tips. It’s going to make it a lot easier for those of us who will be sharing this lifestyle in the future. Mark Kennedy
