Things to Know About Free Camping
Free camping is just that, free. Which typically means no people and no amenities.
Free camping is also referred to as boondocking, primitive camping, or dispersed camping. Since there are no amenities, you must bring in water, power, and food.
This also means whatever you pack in, you must pack out.
Keeping these areas clean is essential. Doing so allows everyone continuous enjoyment of these primitive areas.

Lake Hattie
Lake Hattie is located 30 minutes outside of Laramie. This lake offers free dispersed camping wherever you can find a spot, making it accessible for any size RV.
There are vault toilets if needed, and no hookups.
The road to get to the lake is dirt with some potholes, so make sure to travel carefully. There is also limited cell service with all major carriers.

Why we Love it
This campground is great because of all the beaches, clear water, and the mountain backdrop.
It is also an excellent spot for taking a boat or kayak out on the water. The lake is also stocked with fish such as trout, perch, and salmon.
It’s a quiet place during the weeks but expect larger crowds on the weekends.
Glenrock South Recreation Complex
Glenrock South Recreation Complex is a city park that offers five campsites for free. These sites have no electricity but do provide a water spigot nearby to fill up if needed.
The sites are all cement and level and can accommodate large RV’s.
They also provide a picnic table at each site with a BBQ. A dump station is available on the premises.
There is plenty of cell service for all major carriers.

Why we Love it
This campground is a quiet place with lots of shade. It makes it the perfect place to stop for a night or two in between destinations.
The grounds are very well kept, and there is even a river that runs through the park.
Government Gully Road
Government Gully Road dispersed campground 20 minutes east of Laramie.
This area sits at 9,000 ft. in elevation, making it a little bit cooler even during the summer. The camping area is large and open, offering plenty of space to spread out and fit larger rigs.
The road is relatively flat with some bumps. A steep, short incline must be traversed to reach campsites. Verizon and AT&T also have good cell service.

Why we Love it
This dispersed camping area is great because of the quiet location and great view.
There are views of Laramie and the mountains. It’s also a good launching spot for hiking in the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest.
Riverside City Park
Located in Douglas, the Riverside City Park is a free camping area near town. It’s a quiet location with dirt parking that can accommodate any size RV.
The park offers grills, tables, a dump station and a water spigot. There is cell service for all major phone carriers.

Why we Love it
This is the perfect place to stay for a few nights when traveling between destinations.
It’s a well taken care of park with a river you can fish in. There is lots of space, and it’s within walking distance of town if you want to get a bite to eat.
Lewis Park
Lewis Park is a city park located in Wheatland. This campground has 15 sites, 10 for RV’s and 5 for tents.
The sites offer FREE electricity and water. There are also bathrooms with showers on-premises and a dump station. For a free campground, there are the full amenities to fit any size RV.

Why we Love it
This city park campground is one of the best spots’ money can buy. A free site rarely offers hookups, but this one boasts electricity and water.
It’s a well-located city park within walking distance of restaurants. While free, donations are accepted and recommended to keep the park available for everyone.
Lower Teton View
The Lower Teton View is located just outside of Grand Teton National Park. This is a bustling campground, and at times can be hard to find a spot.
The location and view make it worth it.
There are no amenities, and the road to the location is rough, with almost no level ground. There is also service for major cell carriers (but towers get easily bogged down with traffic).

Why we Love it
This campground is incredible because it is free and has views of the Grand Tetons.
Well located, you also have access to all the hiking in the National Park. You will see some of the most incredible sunsets you will ever see in your life.
Snake River
Snake River dispersed camping area is located just outside the south entrance of Yellowstone National Park. It’s also conveniently located next to a gas station and convenience store.
9 sites can hold up to 2-3 RV’s in each site area.
There is plenty of space to accommodate larger RV’s. However, there is no cell service.

Why we Love it
What makes this campground so great is the proximity of Yellowstone National Park. It can be tough to reserve a spot in the park, making this a great alternative.
It is also situated about 10 minutes from the entrance to Grand Teton National Park.
